Two people were killed in a road ambush in Nyirol County of Jonglei State on Sunday, a local official said.<\/p>\n
James Bol Makuey, the county commissioner, told No.1 Citizen Daily Newspaper that the deceased were on their way to Lanjien town, the county headquarters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe incident happened at a place called Thakroal between Cwil and Langkien. Those killed are among a group of returnees who fled the war in Sudan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to Makuey, the returnees came all the way from Malakal by boat and on reaching Jonglei state territory; they were waylaid, leaving 2 dead and the rest escaped unhurt.<\/p>\n
The county commissioner condemned the attack and that security forces have been deployed to provide safety for the people.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe condemned the attack on returnees. As authorities, we deployed some police officers to help evacuate those who would arrive to our territories from Malakal,\u201d the commissioner stressed.<\/p>\n
The commissioner, however, views that deployment of forces is not sustainable solution but calls on all those involved in criminal activities to give peace a chance.<\/p>\n
No group has claimed responsibility for this latest attack in Jonglei State.<\/p>\n
However, cattle raids and road ambushes are common practice in the restive region of Greater Jonglei and perpetrators often go unpunished.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
