{"id":16544,"date":"2023-08-05T10:56:49","date_gmt":"2023-08-05T10:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onecitizendaily.com\/?p=16544"},"modified":"2023-08-05T10:56:49","modified_gmt":"2023-08-05T10:56:49","slug":"south-sudan-to-join-non-aligned-movement-nam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/05\/south-sudan-to-join-non-aligned-movement-nam\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan to Join Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Bida Elly David<\/p>\n<p>Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs has proposed that South Sudan signs up as a member of a Non-Alliance Movement (NAM0-a global body that seeks to maintain neutrality in other nations&#8217; affairs.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Deng Dau Deng made the proposal after a non-aligned global summit in which leaders from all around the world, including South Sudan, the youngest country, attended.<\/p>\n<p>None alliance movement is a body consisting of a number of countries from the Middle East. It was established in 1962 and its mandate is to be neutral from intervening in matters which can\u2019t befit their role.<\/p>\n<p>Government spokesperson, Michael Makuei told journalists on Friday that the Cabinet approved Deng\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis proposal report was approved and adopted, and he was directed to move forward with the necessary procedures for the joining of the non-aligned,\u201d he said after the Council of Ministers meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Non-Aligned Movement\u00a0(<strong>NAM<\/strong>) is a forum of 120 countries that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-belligerent\">are not formally aligned<\/a>\u00a0with or against any major\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_bloc\">power bloc<\/a>. After the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Nations\">United Nations<\/a>, it is the largest grouping of states worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The movement originated in the aftermath of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korean_War\">Korean War<\/a>, as an effort by some countries to counterbalance the rapid bi-<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polarity_(international_relations)\">polarization<\/a>\u00a0of the world during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cold_War\">Cold War<\/a>, whereby two major powers formed blocs and embarked on a policy to pull the rest of the world into their orbits.<\/p>\n<p>The countries of the Non-Aligned Movement represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations&#8217; members and contain 55% of the world population.<\/p>\n<p>Membership is particularly concentrated in countries considered to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Developing_countries\">developing countries<\/a>, although the Non-Aligned Movement also has a number of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Developed_country\">developed nations<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of these was the pro-Soviet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socialist\">socialist<\/a>\u00a0bloc whose best-known alliance was the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warsaw_Pact\">Warsaw Pact<\/a>, and the other was the pro-American\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capitalist\">capitalist<\/a>\u00a0group of countries, many of which belonged to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NATO\">NATO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1961, drawing on the principles agreed at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bandung_Conference\">Bandung Conference<\/a>\u00a0of 1955, the Non-Aligned Movement was formally established in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgrade\">Belgrade<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Socialist_Federal_Republic_of_Yugoslavia\">Yugoslavia<\/a>, through an initiative of Yugoslav President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Josip_Broz_Tito\">Josip Broz Tito<\/a>, Indian Prime Minister\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jawaharlal_Nehru\">Jawaharlal Nehru<\/a>, Egyptian President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gamal_Abdel_Nasser\">Gamal Abdel Nasser<\/a>, Ghanaian President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kwame_Nkrumah\">Kwame Nkrumah<\/a>, and Indonesian President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sukarno\">Sukarno<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This led to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1st_Summit_of_the_Non-Aligned_Movement\">first Conference of Heads of State or Governments of Non-Aligned Countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the organization was summarized by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fidel_Castro\">Fidel Castro<\/a> in his Havana Declaration of 1979 as to ensure &#8220;the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Bida Elly David Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs has proposed that South Sudan signs up as a member of a Non-Alliance Movement (NAM0-a global body that seeks to maintain neutrality in other nations&#8217; affairs.
