Bishop Emeritus Paride Taban of Catholic Diocese Torit passed away, at aged 87, on Wednesday, All Saints Day.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThe Catholic Bishops and the Catholic Church in South Sudan and Sudan would like to announce the return of our dear Bishop Paride Taban which occurred this afternoon 1st November 2023 in Nairobi,\u201d Bishops\u2019 conference announced.<\/p>\n Bishop Emeritus Paride has been unwell for some times before the Good Shepherd called him on the Solemnity of All the Saints.<\/p>\n Further arrangements for the arrival of the body and requiem mass will be updated in due course, according to the statement.<\/p>\n Biography<\/strong><\/p>\n Bishop Paride Taban is a\u00a0South Sudanese<\/a>\u00a0prelate of the\u00a0Catholic Church<\/a> born in 1936 in Opari of Eastern Equatoria<\/a>.<\/p>\n He was the first leader of the\u00a0Sudan Council of Churches<\/a> founded in February 1990 and served\u00a0as an\u00a0Auxiliary Bishop of Juba<\/a>\u00a0on 28 Jan 1980 to 2 July 1983 and served as\u00a0Bishop of Torit<\/a>\u00a0from 1983 to 2004.<\/p>\n Taban was the first bishop of the\u00a0 Catholic Diocese of Torit<\/a>\u00a0in what was then\u00a0Sudan<\/a>\u00a0from 1983 until 2004.<\/p>\n In 1989, when the then-rebel\u00a0Sudan People’s Liberation Army<\/a>\u00a0(SPLA) overtook Torit, he was arrested along with three other Catholic priests Until 1990.<\/p>\n According to historical facts, Paride and Nathanael Garang were the only two Bishops active in areas held by the SPLA.<\/p>\n Since his retirement from the diocese, he has been leading an effort to make peace in South Sudan real by setting up the\u00a0Kuron Peace Village<\/a>, established in 2005.<\/p>\n Before becoming bishop of\u00a0Torit<\/a>, Taban was auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Juba and the titular bishop of\u00a0Tadamata<\/a>\u00a0from 1980 to 1983.<\/p>\n He was ordained on May 24, 1964, and consecrated a Bishop on May 4, 1980, in\u00a0Kinshasa<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Pope John Paul II<\/a>.<\/p>\n Taban was sent to\u00a0Rwanda<\/a>\u00a0in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide for reconciliation efforts where his contribution also yielded fruits.<\/p>\n Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n Bishop Paride has received numerous awards including the\u00a0Sergio Vieira de Mello<\/a>\u00a0Peace Prize awarded by UN Secretary General\u00a0Ban Ki-moon<\/a>\u00a0in 2013 for his work at the Holy Trinity Peace Village in Kuron.<\/p>\n Another prize was by \u00a0Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation<\/a>\u00a0awarded by the Archbishop of Canterbury\u00a0Justin Welby<\/a>\u00a0in 2017\u00a0for co-founding the ecumenical New Sudan Council of Churches, building\u00a0Kuron Peace Village<\/a>.<\/p>\n The award was also accounted on chairing mediation between the Government of South Sudan and COBRA Faction of the South Sudan Democratic Movement\/Army led by\u00a0David Yau Yau<\/a>, with success on 6 January 2014.<\/p>\n In December 2016, Taban was appointed by the President\u00a0Salva Kiir Mayardit<\/a>\u00a0as a co-chair of the steering committee of National Dialogue.<\/p>\n
