{"id":27781,"date":"2024-08-20T08:01:26","date_gmt":"2024-08-20T08:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onecitizendaily.com\/?p=27781"},"modified":"2024-08-20T08:04:01","modified_gmt":"2024-08-20T08:04:01","slug":"traders-warned-against-smuggling-substandard-goods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/20\/traders-warned-against-smuggling-substandard-goods\/","title":{"rendered":"Traders warned against smuggling substandard goods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Kei Emmanuel Duku<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Juba Central Prison Mobile Court has issued a stern warning to both local and foreign traders involved in the smuggling of fake goods into South Sudan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The warning follows a crackdown in which three traders were arrested and arraigned before court on August 5th for attempting on January 11, 2024, to smuggle counterfeit commodities into the country.<\/p>\n<p>Trucks used for transporting the goods were impounded by the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) at Nesitu Customs point in Juba.<\/p>\n<p>Former SSNBS Acting Executive Director, Dr. Kurowel Kuai Kuorwel, who initiated the case, emphasized the importance of protecting consumers\u2019 health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring my time at SSNBS, I decided to take legal action against traders bypassing mandatory inspections at Nimule Border. I am happy the court ruled in favour of SSNBS,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Current SSNBS Executive Director, Hon. Gloria Nyoka Joseph, revealed that the traders were charged under the South Sudan Customs Law of 2013. Those failing to pay the fine face up to six years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor overseeing the calumniation of this case in enforcing our national standards. The court has additionally issued a stern warning to convicts, cautioning them against future involvement in illegal activities that go against SSNBS,\u201d Nyoka stated.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling is a victory for SSNBS in upholding the law and protecting consumers, according to Nyoka.
