First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar and the U.S. Ambassador Michael J. Adler on Wednesday, discussed peace efforts and the humanitarian situation in the country.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The discussion focused on the progress of the implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement as well as the Tumaini Initiative and humanitarian issues facing the people.<\/p>\n In a statement, Dr. Machar reassured his commitment to address the challenges faced by humanitarian agencies and aid workers operating in the country.<\/p>\n He also reaffirmed the SPLM-IO’s stance in the Tumaini Initiative for Peace in South Sudan.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Ambassador, Michael J. Adler underscores the increasing humanitarian needs in South Sudan \u2013 adding that achieving is fundamental to alleviating further deterioration of humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n The country is experiencing numerous humanitarian crises including floods that have already affected over 700,000 people, and would likely increase to over 3 million nationwide as the rainfall intensifies, according to UNOCHA.<\/p>\n Insecurity and famine are also other disasters that have been attributed to absence of sustainable peace in the country.<\/p>\n The implementation of the 2018 revitalized peace agreement that would transition the country into a democracy in December 2024, is moving at a slow pace hitting several deadlines of extensions.<\/p>\n Currently, the transitional government is engaging with the holdout opposition groups that have not signed the 2018 peace deal through the auspices of the Tumaini Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya \u2013 seeking everlasting tranquillity for the conflict in South Sudan.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Bosco Bush First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar and the U.S. Ambassador Michael J.
