{"id":31634,"date":"2024-12-12T12:13:51","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T10:13:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onecitizendaily.com\/?p=31634"},"modified":"2024-12-12T12:13:51","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T10:13:51","slug":"norway-commits-additional-usd3-6-million-to-support-reproductive-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/12\/norway-commits-additional-usd3-6-million-to-support-reproductive-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway commits additional USD3.6 million to support reproductive health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Staff writer<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The government of Norway has donated an additional funding of about 3.6 million USD, to support Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) initiatives in South Sudan.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Norwegian Embassy in Juba on Tuesday, announced handing over of the funds to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).<\/p>\n<p>At least an estimate of 2.2 million USD, of the funding is earmarked to addressing obstetric fistula, a devastating yet preventable condition.<\/p>\n<p>The amount was announced as the country marked International Human Rights Day and the end of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan faces an alarming backlog of an estimated 60,000 cases of obstetric fistula requiring surgical intervention, with fewer than 1,000 individuals having received treatment. This additional funding will be a lifeline for countless women and girls, enabling them to regain their health, dignity, and independence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough this additional funding we support the acceleration of efforts to ensure that women receive care with dignity to eliminate obstetric fistula in South Sudan,\u201d said H.E Roar Haugsdal, the Norwegian Ambassador to South Sudan. \u201cSexual and reproductive health and rights are a cornerstone of Norway&#8217;s global development priorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Norway has allocated Norwegian Kroner 9.6 billion (approximately 858 million USD) towards global (SRHR) initiatives for the 2020\u20132025 period, highlighting its long-standing commitment to this critical issue.<\/p>\n<p>In South Sudan, the Embassy\u2019s support to the UNFPA Country Programme includes not only treatment for obstetric fistula but also preventive measures such as addressing child marriage and teenage pregnancy, improving access to contraceptives, and revitalizing the National Taskforce on Fistula Management.<\/p>\n<p>Aligned with the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, this initiative underscores the Embassy\u2019s focus on protecting women and girls in fragile contexts.<\/p>\n<p>By prioritizing their health and rights, Norway aims to empower survivors with a second chance at a dignified life and contribute to sustainable development in South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Staff writer &nbsp; The government of Norway has donated an additional funding of about 3.6 million USD, to support Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) initiatives in South Sudan.
