{"id":33039,"date":"2025-02-04T10:08:26","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T08:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onecitizendaily.com\/?p=33039"},"modified":"2025-02-04T10:09:31","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T08:09:31","slug":"adhere-to-conflict-sensitive-reporting-ujoss-urges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/04\/adhere-to-conflict-sensitive-reporting-ujoss-urges\/","title":{"rendered":"Adhere to conflict-sensitive reporting-UJOSS urges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By William Madouk<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has called for adherence to conflict-sensitive reporting in news coverage.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UJOSS\u2019 Secretary-General Majak Daniel Kuany issued a statement expressing concern over increasing criticism directed at journalists and media outlets regarding coverage of conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>Kuany acknowledged that constructive criticism is valuable, but emphasized that it is important for journalists and media houses to adhere to the principles of &#8220;do no harm&#8221; and impartiality in their reporting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) is deeply concerned by the rising of criticism of journalists and media houses covering conflict-related issues,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUJOSS urges journalists and media houses to practice conflict-sensitive reporting when covering disagreement or conflict-related issues, UJOSS boss added.<\/p>\n<p>He cautioned that attacks on journalists and media outlets for informing the public undermine press freedom and hinder inclusive dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJournalists play a critical role in delivering accurate, balanced, and impartial information during crises,\u201d Kuany explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRigorous fact-checking and fair representation are essential to building the credibility of both journalists and their media outlets,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>UJOSS encouraged members of the public with grievances to follow proper channels, such as formally meeting with media outlet management or, if necessary, filing a complaint with the Media Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Kuany highlighted that press freedom is protected under Article 24 of the Transitional Constitution, Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and Article 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples&#8217; Rights (ACHPR), all of which emphasize the need for responsible journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUJOSS calls on the public to raise concerns through lawful channels instead of hostile campaigns,\u201d he warned<br \/>\nHe also called on citizens to ensure the protection of media professionals, in accordance with national and international legal frameworks.<\/p>\n<p>The Union of Journalists reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and supporting responsible reporting in South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>This statement comes after Netizens criticized some media houses for bias in their reporting of the recent attack on herders in Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By William Madouk Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has called for adherence to conflict-sensitive reporting in news coverage.
