President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reiterated his government\u2019s unwavering commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining peace in Abyei.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n According to a statement on Wednesday, an attacker reportedly stormed Abyei and forcibly removed a detainee, raising concerns about cross-border security.<\/p>\n The President\u2019s remarks came after a security briefing by Abyei Chief Administrator Charles Abyei Jok, who noted that the area had remained largely peaceful until the recent incident.<\/p>\n It also highlighted that President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday commended the role of Abyei’s local leadership in restoring calm and stability following an incursion by armed Misseriya men from neighbouring Sudan.<\/p>\n \u200eThe statement further noted that the situation had been swiftly contained, with relative stability now restored, particularly in the southern parts of Abyei, where communities continued to coexist peacefully.<\/p>\n It also stated that the President Kiir reiterated his government\u2019s unwavering commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining peace in Abyei.<\/p>\n The boundaries of Abyei have been contested since South Sudan became independent in 2011, and lacks a formally recognized governance system.<\/p>\n The development of infrastructure and key services has been limited, including in areas such as healthcare and education.<\/p>\n Despite this, the Amiet market has become an increasingly important economic hub between Sudan and South Sudan, although it has also become a locus for tension to emerge between traders from different communities.<\/p>\n The area also serves as a key transit point for those travelling between South Sudan and Sudan.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Lodu William Odiya President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reiterated his government\u2019s unwavering commitment to protecting civilians and maintaining peace in Abyei.
