{"id":40301,"date":"2025-10-10T10:37:34","date_gmt":"2025-10-10T08:37:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=40301"},"modified":"2025-10-10T10:37:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T08:37:34","slug":"south-sudan-to-commence-construction-of-fiber-optic-cable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/10\/south-sudan-to-commence-construction-of-fiber-optic-cable\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan to commence construction of Fiber-optic cable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>By Alan Clement<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>South Sudan is set to commence construction of a 2,400-kilometer Fiber optic cable in December, marking a transformative leap in the country\u2019s digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>According to statement issued by the Ministry, the announcement was made by Engineer Thomas Gatkuoth, Undersecretary in the Ministry of ICT and Postal Services, during a panel discussion on Digital Governance in Africa held on Wednesday in Lusaka, Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project is a cornerstone of our national strategy to accelerate digital transformation and regional integration\u201d the statement partly read.<\/p>\n<p>The statement stated that the officials affirmed that once completed, it would not only improve connectivity but also unlock new opportunities in education, e-commerce, and public service delivery.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the landmark project cable would connect South Sudan to the Indian Ocean through neighboring Kenya, enabling high-speed internet access and laying the foundation for a modern digital economy.<\/p>\n<p>It also stressed that Engineer Gatkuoth emphasized the importance of robust policy frameworks, regional cooperation, and private sector investment in driving Africa\u2019s digital future.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it stated Gatkuoth extended an invitation to international investors to explore opportunities in South Sudan, particularly in energy and power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are open for business. South Sudan is committed to creating an enabling environment for innovation, investment, and inclusive growth\u201d statement partly read.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the statement stated that the Lusaka forum, which brought together ICT ministers, regulators, and private sector leaders from across the continent, discussions focused on accelerating digital infrastructure, investment opportunities, cybersecurity, and data protection.<\/p>\n<p>It also underscored the Fiber optic project is expected to be implemented in phases, with feasibility assessments and groundwork scheduled to begin immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce operational, officials project it will cut internet costs by up to 60 percent and significantly improve connectivity across government institutions, businesses, and rural communities\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>The statement emphasized that this investment is part of our broader vision to build a technology-driven, inclusive economy that serves all citizens\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Early this year, the\u00a0South Sudan\u2019s Ministry of Information, Communication Technology (ICT), and Postal Services has greenlit a\u00a0$9 million\u00a0budget to initiate the design phase of the national fibre optic implementation project, a critical step toward addressing the country\u2019s longstanding digital and infrastructure challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0By Alan Clement South Sudan is set to commence construction of a 2,400-kilometer Fiber optic cable in December, marking a transformative leap in the country\u2019s digital infrastructure.
