{"id":40761,"date":"2025-10-27T15:37:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:37:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=40761"},"modified":"2025-10-27T15:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:37:11","slug":"calm-returns-to-mapaw-after-gunfire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/27\/calm-returns-to-mapaw-after-gunfire\/","title":{"rendered":"Calm returns to Mapaw after gunfire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Yiep Joseph<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>After reports of a brief exchange of gunfire at the Mapaw checkpoint on Sunday, calm returned following intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Early Sunday morning gunshots were heard toward Mapaw Checkpoint, just along the\u00a0 Juba-Bor Road.<\/p>\n<p>The eyewitnesses said that the gunfire came as a result of a misunderstanding between army officials escorting a convoy to Jonglei and the checkpoint officers.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with this outlet, Mach Kuol, a trader in the Mapaw area, confirmed the incident, citing that some of the soldiers escorting a\u00a0 convoy to Jonglei encountered misunderstandings with those at the checkpoint.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that the convoy was escorting the body of the late Martha Atong, wife of Bishop Nathaniel Garang Anyieth, a prominent bishop in the story of South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>Kuol stated that the incident occurred after security escorts in one of the vehicles in the convoy had a misunderstanding with the officers at the checkpoint.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, expressed that calm return immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Kuol expressed that the misunderstanding was resolved and the business operates normally in Mapaw.<\/p>\n<p>He declined to reveal the damages during the gunfire, citing that he only heard from people that some were injured.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to reach the SSPDF spokesperson for comment were not successful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Yiep Joseph After reports of a brief exchange of gunfire at the Mapaw checkpoint on Sunday, calm returned following intervention.
