{"id":41002,"date":"2025-11-10T10:45:47","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=41002"},"modified":"2025-11-10T10:47:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T08:47:05","slug":"govt-vows-to-ensure-free-inclusive-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/10\/govt-vows-to-ensure-free-inclusive-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t vows to ensure free, inclusive media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Alan Clement <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, David Yau Yau, has reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to fostering a free and inclusive media landscape in South Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister made the remarks during a media related event in Juba organized by stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Yau Yau said the ministry\u2019s policies are geared toward promoting inclusivity and access to information for all citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ministry is committed to supporting a free, responsible, and diverse media landscape,\u201d Yau Yau said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will champion policies that remove structural barriers hindering the effective participation of women in media professions and political life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Yau Yau further stressed that empowering women journalists is essential for transparency and civic participation, noting that female media professionals \u201cbring unique perspectives that can amplify the voices, rights and needs of women in the constitutional and electoral discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deputy minister also disclosed that the government recognizes women as central to the country\u2019s political transition, which includes constitutional making and upcoming electoral processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen, who constitute more than half of our population, must be at the very heart of this journey,\u201d the Deputy Minister added.<\/p>\n<p>The Deputy Minister\u2019s remarks were reinforced by Ndubisi Obiorah, Senior Political Affairs Officer at UNMISS, who noted that women in the media play a critical role in shaping South Sudan\u2019s democratic narrative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough reporting, storytelling, and other forms of public engagement, women journalists bring perspectives that hold institutions accountable and foster inclusivity and respect for human rights,\u201d Obiorah said.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Kasumi Nishigaya, Chief of the UNMISS Gender Advisory Unit, emphasized that women\u2019s participation in media is linked to the broader Women, Peace, and Security agenda under UN Security Council Resolution 1325.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipation must go hand in hand with protection and prevention,\u201d Nishigaya said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen journalists must be supported to take on leadership roles such as spokespersons and editors-in-chief,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Yau Yau concluded by calling for collaboration across sectors to advance gender equality in media and ensure that women\u2019s voices are heard and respected in national decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe future of South Sudanese democracy depends on inclusivity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing the power of information and communication, we can build a nation where every citizen especially women is empowered to participate meaningfully,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Alan Clement The Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, David Yau Yau, has reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to fostering a free and inclusive media landscape in South Sudan.
