{"id":41335,"date":"2025-11-21T12:01:27","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T10:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=41335"},"modified":"2025-11-21T12:01:27","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T10:01:27","slug":"calm-returns-to-torit-after-deadly-clashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2025\/11\/21\/calm-returns-to-torit-after-deadly-clashes\/","title":{"rendered":"Calm Returns to Torit After Deadly Clashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Jacob Onuha Nelson<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Officials in Eastern Equatoria State (EES) report that calm has returned to Torit following a recent attack and subsequent clashes that left a top police officer dead.<\/p>\n<p>The violence came amid reports of fighting between the South Sudan People\u2019s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) earlier this week, resulting in the loss of life in the state.<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive phone interview, John Elia Ahaji, the Minister of Information and Communication for Eastern Equatoria State, confirmed that the situation had stabilized, with citizens resuming their daily activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is normal. People are going with their business. Business activities are ongoing. Cars are moving,\u201d Elia informed the public.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister emphasized that the situation is firmly under control and urged against further anxiety, inviting doubters to witness the return to normalcy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation is under control. There is nothing for people to worry,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cSo for us, the state government, we will make sure that the citizens are protected against any wrong elements who want to destabilize peace. By all means, we assure this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The immediate aftermath of the initial attack was described as shocking, but local residents now confirm the situation has stabilized.<\/p>\n<p>Silego Saverio, a technician at Torit State Hospital, recalled the panic but noted the quick return to calm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy then, when the incident happened, the situation was horrific where every resident was unhappy when you\u2019re hearing the gunshot. It wasn\u2019t easy. People couldn\u2019t go to work,\u201d Saverio said. \u201cBut since yesterday, the situation is normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Stephen Okuye, a resident of Matara in Eastern Equatoria State, described the earlier fear, particularly when government forces were patrolling the town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople were indoors, not moving anyhow, because I witnessed the situation was appalling and alarming,\u201d Okuye exclaimed. \u201cBut now the situation is calm and normal as we are speaking. People are working, and even since yesterday, people were working.
