{"id":42722,"date":"2026-02-09T12:43:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T10:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=42722"},"modified":"2026-02-09T12:43:46","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T10:43:46","slug":"hippo-attacks-man-in-aweil-east-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/09\/hippo-attacks-man-in-aweil-east-county\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a0  Hippo Attacks Man in Aweil East County  \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Hou Akot Hou<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A 30\u2011year\u2011old man has been bitten by a hippopotamus at Wun\u2011Atem\u2011Mei village in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.<\/p>\n<p>Health Education focal point, Luka Lual Aleu Jok, told this publication that the incident occurred on Tuesday at around 2:00 p.m. while the man was bathing in the River Lol near Pariak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man, identified as Beng Garang Aguer, was bitten by a hippo as he was bathing at Wun\u2011Atem\u2011Mei village, where River Lol passes,\u201d Jok explained.<\/p>\n<p>He said the victim sustained injuries to his leg and thigh and is currently receiving treatment at Aweil Civil Hospital. \u201cThe victim is being treated here at the hospital as we continue to monitor him. According to initial reports, he is responding well to treatment,\u201d Jok added.<\/p>\n<p>The health official emphasized the need for caution, noting that many residents are not sufficiently wary of the dangers posed by wild animals. \u201cThis is not the first time a hippo has attacked people in the river. Such incidents have been recurring, and while communities often request that the animals be killed, wildlife authorities usually resist,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jok further noted that these occurrences continue to pose threats, leaving residents uncertain about how to respond. \u201cMany people do not know whether they are allowed to kill such wild animals, and those who attempt often face arrest,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Despite ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Wildlife and Tourism to preserve wild animals for tourism purposes, local residents complain of inadequate assurances for their safety, as attacks remain a persistent concern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Hou Akot Hou A 30\u2011year\u2011old man has been bitten by a hippopotamus at Wun\u2011Atem\u2011Mei village in Aweil East County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
