It must begin with ordinary citizens who choose unity over division and dialogue over violence.

For years, communities across the country have experienced cycles of tension fuelled by tribalism, political rivalry, cattle-related conflicts, and economic struggles.

These conflicts often start at the grassroots level, where rumours spread quickly and mistrust grows easily. If instability can begin within communities, then peace can also begin there.

Citizens must understand that peace is not only the absence of gunfire. Peace means coexistence, respect, justice, and equal opportunity. It means settling disputes through dialogue instead of revenge.

It means seeing one another first as South Sudanese before identifying by tribe or political affiliation.

The youth, who make up the majority of the population, have a particularly important role. Many young people face unemployment and frustration, which can make them vulnerable to manipulation by politicians or armed groups.

However, youth can also be powerful agents of change. By engaging in entrepreneurship, education, community service, and constructive activism, young people can help build a culture of responsibility and accountability.

Religious leaders, traditional chiefs, teachers, and parents must also promote messages of tolerance and reconciliation. Churches, mosques, schools, and community gatherings should become platforms for unity rather than division.

When leaders at the local level preach peace consistently, communities are more likely to embrace stability.

Furthermore, citizens must demand good governance through peaceful and lawful means. Holding leaders accountable does not require violence or destruction. It requires civic awareness, participation in public discussions, and responsible journalism.

When citizens speak out against corruption, tribal favoritism, and injustice in a peaceful manner, they strengthen democracy and national unity.

Economic hardship is another major challenge. Rising prices, unemployment, and limited services often increase frustration among the population.

Yet violence only worsens economic conditions. Investors withdraw, markets close, and development stalls. Stability, on the other hand, creates opportunities for growth. Small businesses flourish, humanitarian services expand, and education systems improve when communities are peaceful.

National agreements signed by leaders are important, but they must be supported by grassroots commitment. Peace agreements cannot succeed if citizens continue to fuel division at the local level. Every individual has a responsibility to reject hate speech, verify information before sharing it, and encourage dialogue in times of tension.

The future of South Sudan depends not only on politicians in offices but on ordinary people in villages, towns, and cities. If citizens take ownership of peace, promote unity in their daily interactions, and resolve disputes through dialogue, the country can move toward lasting stability.

Peace begins with us. When every citizen commits to it, stability will no longer be a distant dream but a shared national reality.

God protect South Sudan

Be the spectator!

As South Sudan continues to navigate economic hardship, insecurity, and political uncertainty, many citizens place all responsibility for peace and development on the shoulders of political leaders.
