Every day of inaction is another day of injustice.

Women in South Sudan face relentless challenges including gender-based violence, forced marriage, denial of inheritance, and exclusion from leadership. These are not abstract issues; they are lived realities for mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives across the nation.

The bills that would criminalize marital rape, protect survivors of violence, guarantee equal inheritance rights, and enforce the 35% quota for women in government have been drafted, debated, and shelved.

This delay is not neutral; it is harmful. It denies justice, it denies dignity, and it denies progress.

Parliament must recognize that protecting women is not charity; it is a constitutional duty and a moral imperative. The Revitalized Peace Agreement raised the bar for women’s representation, but without enforcement, quotas remain empty promises.

The Maputo Protocol and CEDAW commitments demand action, not rhetoric. South Sudan cannot claim to honor its international obligations while refusing to pass the very laws that make those obligations real.

The government must act with urgency. These bills are not optional either; they are essential to building a nation where women can live free from fear, where girls can dream without limits, and where equality is more than words on paper.

Passing these laws will not only protect women and girls; it will strengthen families, communities, and the nation itself. A country that fails its women fails its future.

We call on Parliament: no more excuses, no more delays. Pass the women’s rights laws now.
