A seasoned mediator, diplomat, and constitutional expert, he was widely respected for his ability to navigate some of the world\u2019s most complex political landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>His enduring influence is felt not only in the halls of the UN but the lives of the nations he helped guide.<\/p>\n<p>His tenure at UNMISS was marked by a steadfast conviction that the international community must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of South Sudan in their journey of nation-building.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement paying tribute to Haysom, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres described him as a \u201ctireless peacemaker and steadfast champion of the values of the United Nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guterres added: \u201cMr. Haysom devoted his life to justice, dialogue, and reconciliation from his central role in South Africa\u2019s democratic transition to years of leadership in UN posts in some of the world\u2019s most fragile settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Born and educated in South Africa, Haysom\u2019s ideals were shaped by his early years as an anti-apartheid activist and lawyer defending human rights.<\/p>\n<p>His lifelong passion for justice fueled his dedication to democracy and the rule of law, values he carried into every assignment. In South Sudan, he consistently emphasized that the will of the people must be the fulcrum upon which the nation shapes its political destiny.<\/p>\n<p>In a tribute to Haysom, the African Union Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said: \u201cMr. Haysom was not only a distinguished diplomat, but a trusted partner and a dear friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom his service alongside President Nelson Mandela in the founding years of democratic South Africa, to his tireless efforts for peace in our region and beyond, his career was defined by an unwavering commitment to justice, dialogue, and human dignity,\u201d the Au\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues recall his humility, patience, and belief in dialogue even in the most challenging moments.
