Johnson<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The INTREPID South Sudan Civil Society Organization has called on the newly appointed Speaker of Jonglei State\u2019s Transitional Legislative Assembly (TLA) to prioritize reopening the assembly after more than two years of inactivity.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Tuesday to No.1 Citizen Newspaper, the Executive Director of INTREPID, Bol Deng Bol, emphasized the urgency of restoring the assembly to ensure inclusive governance and effective government functioning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appeal to the Speaker to prioritize the reopening of the assembly for inclusive governance and the effective functioning of the government,\u201d Deng said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that reopening the Jonglei State TLA has long been a key advocacy priority for civil society groups and expressed optimism following the recent appointment of a new Speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal comes after the appointment of Malual Gabriel Kon as Speaker of the Jonglei State TLA on Monday, through a presidential decree issued by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.<\/p>\n<p>INTREPID welcomed the appointment, highlighting that the assembly has been non-functional for over two years. Deng stated that the appointment marks a positive step toward restoring the legislative arm of the state government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome this appointment and wish Malual Gabriel Kon a smooth transition into the legislative arm of government, with the hope that the assembly will resume its key role,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Deng stressed that the assembly plays a critical role in providing checks and balances, which have been absent during the prolonged inactivity. He added that the lack of a functioning legislative body has significantly affected governance in the state.<\/p>\n<p>He also pointed out that Jonglei State has been operating without an approved budget since 2020 due to the assembly\u2019s inactivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince 2020, Jonglei State has been spending without a budget passed by the assembly,\u201d Deng said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Deng called for improved welfare for members of the legislative assembly to enhance their effectiveness. He further urged the new Speaker to strengthen collaboration with civil society and the media to promote citizen-centered and inclusive policymaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appeal to the Speaker to improve working relations with civil society and the media for citizen-centered, inclusive, and quality policymaking,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Chol D.
