The World Food Programme (WFP) and the European Union have officially handed over newly constructed feeder roads to the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State government.<\/p>\n

The handover marked a significant step toward improving rural connectivity and livelihoods in the state<\/p>\n

According to the joint press release, this road is expected to benefit more than 150,000 people, particularly residents of Aweil West County, by enhancing access to markets, schools, and healthcare services, especially during the rainy season when many routes become impassable.<\/p>\n

Funded under the European Union\u2019s Global Gateway Strategy and implemented by WFP over five years, the initiative has rehabilitated nearly 70 kilometers of feeder roads across the state.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the handover, EU Ambassador Pelle Enarsson described it as a milestone in improving lives and strengthening economic resilience in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s handover here in Aweil is an important milestone for the people of South Sudan. The European Union is proud to support infrastructure that improves people\u2019s lives and strengthens the country\u2019s economic resilience,\u201d said H.E. Pelle Enarsson.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that the roads would unlock agricultural potential, boost trade, and improve security, while also urging authorities to ensure proper maintenance for long-term benefits.<\/p>\n

Northern Bahr el Ghazal Deputy Governor Tong Lual Ayat welcomed the development, noting that such infrastructure investments are already making a tangible difference in people\u2019s daily lives.<\/p>\n

While infrastructure development remains a core responsibility of the government, we value the continued partnership of the European Union in helping to address critical gaps, and I am also pleased to note that the security situation in the state remains stable, providing an enabling environment for further development, including the expansion of essential services such as healthcare and education,\u201d Tong Lual Ayat stated<\/p>\n

He highlighted the importance of continued partnerships in addressing infrastructure gaps and reaffirmed that the state\u2019s stable security situation provides an enabling environment for further development.<\/p>\n

South Sudan continues to face major infrastructure challenges, with just over 20,000 kilometers of roads nationwide, only a small fraction of which are paved.<\/p>\n

WFP Acting Country Director Adham Effendi underscored the broader impact of the project, describing the roads as a \u201clifeline\u201d that reduces isolation, lowers transport costs, and improves access to essential services.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis road is more than mere infrastructure; it is a vital lifeline. It reduces isolation, particularly during the rainy season; lowers transport costs for users; and enhances access to markets, health facilities, and schools,\u201d Adham Effendi stated.<\/p>\n

He added that such infrastructure contributes to food security, economic transformation, and social cohesion.<\/p>\n

The project, titled \u201cFeeder Roads to Strengthen Livelihoods and Resilience of Rural Communities,\u201d is funded by the European Union with \u20ac22.1 million and implemented by WFP across four states and nine counties.
