Here, children must also learn how to cultivate. It prepares them for life,” he noted.

Other community members echoed this sentiment, highlighting how agricultural engagement supports families and keeps the youth occupied during the break.

Achol Nyibol, a refugee in Nyumanzi, said, “Life is not easy. When children help in the gardens, we can produce more food for the family.”

On the other hand, Peter Gatdet said, “Instead of moving around doing nothing, we join our parents on the farms. It keeps us disciplined and focused.”

Noting the importance of time management, she added, “We help in the morning or evening, then we also have time to read our books. It is important to balance.” Akot Ajok (Student, Nyumanzi) mentioned.

Host communities are playing a crucial role in supporting refugee livelihoods. In parts of Adjumani District, they have donated or leased land to refugees who show a strong interest in farming.

Okello James, a local leader from the host community, told No. 1 Citizen that this cooperation has strengthened relations between the two groups.

“We have given some land to refugees willing to farm. When they produce food, it benefits both communities and promotes peaceful coexistence,” James explained.

Community leaders note that these initiatives do more than improve food security; they also reduce the community’s dependency on humanitarian aid.

As the holiday continues, both refugees and host communities are actively encouraging students to take advantage of the break.

By engaging in agriculture, the youth are learning vital skills for survival and building a sustainable pathway toward self-reliance.

By Jurugo Emmanuel Ogasto South Sudanese refugee students studying in Uganda have been urged to actively engage in agriculture during the ongoing short school holiday, as families seek to boost food production and improve livelihoods.
