The mission aimed to review the implementation of healthcare and gender-based violence (GBV) support programs funded by international partners.

The minister noted that ongoing interventions implemented since 2022 through partners such as Amref Health Africa and other agencies have significantly improved health outcomes for mothers and children across the state.

“We acknowledge the support from Canada and Norway to the communities of Western Equatoria State through the delivery of essential health services, particularly maternal health care,” Arona stated.

He further emphasised that the program is a joint initiative involving the state ministries of health, gender, youth, and sports, ensuring a coordinated approach for greater impact and long-term sustainability.

Following the minister’s address, a delegation including representatives from the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Juba, the Government of Canada, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) met with state officials to assess program delivery.

Speaking upon arrival at Yambio Airstrip, Inger Elisabeth Meyer, deputy head of mission of the Royal Norwegian Embassy, expressed gratitude for the warm reception.

“We value the opportunity to travel beyond the capital to see, observe, and assess programs on the ground,” Meyer said.

This helps us understand what is working well, what needs improvement, and how our support is being implemented.”

Meyer highlighted Norway’s long-standing partnership with South Sudan, dating back to 1972, and reaffirmed their commitment to the region despite current challenges.

She specifically praised the cross-sector coordination, noting that women, youth, and children are often the most vulnerable during crises.

“Our support focuses on strengthening systems, building capacity, and improving community linkages in these critical areas,” she added, while also calling for stronger domestic financing from government institutions to ensure these services remain sustainable.

Innocent Modisaotsile, representing the Government of Canada, reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to improving the lives of women and girls, specifically regarding sexual and reproductive health and rights.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the capacity of health workers, including midwives.

“We are here today to see how this work is being implemented on the ground and to hear from stakeholders about what is working well and where the challenges lie,” Modisaotsile said.

He praised the collaboration among state ministries as a potential model for other regions. “When resources are limited, collaboration becomes even more critical. We truly commend the teamwork we have seen here.”

Innocent Marisausire, UNFPA Team Leader, underscored that the mission’s primary goal was to ensure accountability and identify areas for growth.

“Our mission is to review how donor funding has been utilised and to demonstrate that taxpayers’ contributions have supported meaningful interventions,” Marisausire explained.

He concluded by noting that the team is actively identifying service gaps to better tailor future interventions.

“We are identifying existing gaps in sexual and reproductive health services with a view to strengthening our support and improving service delivery across the state.”

By Jackson Gaaniko Western Equatoria State Minister of Health, James Abdallah Arona, has commended development partners for their steadfast support of the state’s health sector, particularly in strengthening maternal and child health services.
