The United States Department of State on Tuesday announced targeted visa restrictions on individuals involved in undermining peace in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

According to a statement extended to the media, the U.S. said the restrictions target officials believed to be obstructing the peace agreement in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, pursuant to authority under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, Secretary Rubio is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on members of South Sudan\u2019s transitional government. These individuals have undermined peace in South Sudan, including by impeding the ceasefire agreement and engaging in corruption that has fueled the conflict,\u201d the statement partly read.<\/p>\n

Efforts to reach the South Sudan government spokesperson for comment were not successful at press time.<\/p>\n

The U.S. vowed to use all necessary means to ensure peace and accountability in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to use all tools available to expose and promote accountability for members of the transitional government, SSPDF officials, and other individuals who steal from the South Sudanese people and threaten peace,\u201d it read.<\/p>\n

The U.S. State Department also said that the embezzlement of public funds in South Sudan has been documented by several reputable bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cNumerous well-respected investigative bodies have documented how corrupt officials and entities, including Crawford Capital, Ltd., have siphoned money from South Sudan\u2019s treasury and stolen foreign assistance funds intended to support the South Sudanese people,\u201d the statement reads in part.<\/p>\n

The United States said it will continue to stand with the South Sudanese people, who want to live in peace and dignity.<\/p>\n

The sanctions come days after a visit by Africa Bureau senior official Nick Checker, who urged South Sudanese leaders to take urgent steps to restore peace, improve governance, and strengthen cooperation on security and immigration issues.<\/p>\n

The measures also come amid growing criticism of the government\u2019s move to unilaterally amend the 2018 peace agreement without the participation of key stakeholders, especially the opposition group led by suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, who is currently detained and facing treason charges.<\/p>\n

The latest tensions escalated on Monday when lawmakers from the SPLM-IO walked out of parliament in protest against the tabling of proposed amendments to the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).<\/p>\n

The opposition MPs accused the government of attempting to amend the peace agreement without consultation and consensus among the signatory parties.<\/p>\n

The lawmakers argued that the amendment process violated provisions of the 2018 peace deal and warned that unilateral changes could undermine the fragile transitional arrangement.<\/p>\n

They called for inclusive dialogue and the full implementation of pending provisions of the peace agreement, including security arrangements, constitutional reforms, and transitional justice mechanisms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
