{"id":44731,"date":"2026-05-19T14:12:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T12:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=44731"},"modified":"2026-05-19T14:12:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T12:12:22","slug":"south-sudan-takes-control-of-its-national-airspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/19\/south-sudan-takes-control-of-its-national-airspace\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan takes control of its national airspace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Jackson Gaaniko<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday announced that South Sudan has officially taken full control of its national airspace.<\/p>\n<p>He described the move as a major milestone in strengthening the country\u2019s sovereignty, aviation management, and economic independence.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made during an official event in Juba attended by senior government officials and aviation authorities.<\/p>\n<p>President Kiir, in his speech, said the development reflects the country\u2019s growing institutional capacity to independently manage strategic national assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have reclaimed our sovereignty by taking control of our airspace,\u201d President Kiir declared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom today onward, our airspace is fully under our control,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The president emphasised that the government is committed to ensuring that the country\u2019s air navigation and aviation systems operate smoothly, efficiently, and without interruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot afford any failure in this system because maintaining control of our airspace is essential,\u201d Kiir said while directing aviation authorities and technical teams to maintain high operational standards.<\/p>\n<p>For years, South Sudan\u2019s airspace management partly relied on external technical coordination and regional arrangements following the country\u2019s independence in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The latest development now gives the country direct authority over air traffic management, aircraft coordination, and air navigation services within its territorial skies.<\/p>\n<p>Government officials say the takeover is expected to improve the monitoring and regulation of aircraft movement, enhance aviation safety, strengthen national security, and increase revenue collection from overflight and navigation fees paid by international airlines using South Sudan\u2019s airspace.<\/p>\n<p>The move is also expected to support the growth of the country\u2019s aviation sector by improving communication systems, air traffic coordination, and operational efficiency at airports across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts view the development as an important step toward strengthening South Sudan\u2019s national institutions and reducing dependency on external systems in managing key sectors of the economy and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has continued efforts to expand and modernise its aviation and transport sectors despite ongoing economic and infrastructural challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jackson Gaaniko President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday announced that South Sudan has officially taken full control of its national airspace.
