A two-year-old child drowned on Monday at an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Ajak-Kuac Payam, Twic County, in South Sudan\u2019s Warrap State.<\/p>\n

According to Peter Maror Malou, a police inspector in Ajak-Kuac Payam, the tragic incident occurred when the child\u2019s mother left early in the morning to have her food ration card validated at the camp. Unnoticed, the toddler followed her and accidentally fell into a deep pool of water.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened on Monday is that a child identified as Nyandeng Kir died after drowning in a pool while the mother had gone for ration card validation,\u201d Maror told reporters. \u201cShe left home very early in the morning, and the two-year-old followed her and fell into the water, where she drowned.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family is among those displaced by conflict between rival communities in Abiemnhom County of the Ruweng Administrative Area.<\/p>\n

Inspector Maror described the incident as heartbreaking and said residents were shocked by the tragedy. He also criticised what he described as poor coordination between camp leaders and humanitarian organisations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis situation reflects the unfair distribution of assistance to people affected by local conflicts, especially those displaced from Abiemnhom, who should be prioritised,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are malpractices and discrimination in the system, and now we see the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n

He urged displaced residents to remain patient as local authorities work to address food shortages and other humanitarian concerns affecting families in the camp.<\/p>\n

Maror also appealed to parents and guardians to closely monitor young children, especially as many adults leave home daily to seek income through small businesses such as tea making and restaurant work amid worsening economic conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
