The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) has announced plans to develop a regulatory framework aimed at addressing widespread public concerns over alleged inaccurate internet data usage and billing by telecommunications companies in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the World Metrology Day celebration at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Garang Mayor Nyariel, Technical Manager in the Office of the Executive Director at SSNBS, said the Bureau is working on systems that will regulate and monitor mobile internet data consumption to ensure consumers are billed fairly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to make sure that if you are buying one GB of data, you are actually being charged for one GB of data that you have used,\u201d Garang said.<\/p>\n

The move comes amid growing complaints from internet users across the country who say purchased data bundles are often depleted within a short period of time, raising concerns over transparency in telecom billing systems.<\/p>\n

Garang admitted that the bureau has, for years, struggled with the limited infrastructure needed to independently measure and verify internet data usage.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the longest time, the Bureau of Standards has been challenged in putting an infrastructural framework that could be able to measure these things,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

According to him, SSNBS is currently engaging different stakeholders and development partners to establish mechanisms that will ensure accountability and fairness in internet data consumption.<\/p>\n

He further revealed that the bureau has already started discussions with the National Communication Authority as part of the process of creating a comprehensive regulatory structure before involving telecom operators, including the MTN group, Zain, and the Digitel group.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working on a digitalisation project and looking at how to regulate this framework,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Although no specific timeline was provided for the completion of the initiative, Garang expressed optimism that the planned system would restore consumer confidence and improve transparency in the telecommunications sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something to be hopeful for. Many people complain that they buy data, and within a few minutes, the data is already finished. When this framework is established, consumers will be assured that they are only billed for the exact amount of data they use,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
