{"id":44900,"date":"2026-05-22T15:05:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T13:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=44900"},"modified":"2026-05-22T17:02:33","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T15:02:33","slug":"journalists-trained-on-electoral-reporting-in-rumbek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/22\/journalists-trained-on-electoral-reporting-in-rumbek\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalists trained on electoral reporting in Rumbek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Yang Ater Yang<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJoSS), with support from Norwegian People\u2019s Aid (NPA), trained 20 journalists and stakeholders in Rumbek on electoral reporting, media professionalism, and cybercrime awareness ahead of South Sudan\u2019s anticipated 2026 elections.<\/p>\n<p>The one-day forum brought together journalists, election officials, civil society representatives, youth leaders, members of the judiciary, and state government officials to discuss collaboration during the electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the workshop, Johnson Juma Batal, representing UJOSS, said the engagement aimed to strengthen cooperation between journalists and institutions ahead of the elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis discussion is basically focused on two things,\u201d he said. \u201cFirst, it is to bring stakeholders together to strengthen coordination with journalists on how elections will be conducted and how they can work together to ensure free and peaceful elections and post-election processes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also said the workshop helped disseminate information about the Cybercrime and Computer Misuse Act, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President signed the law because many cyber-related crimes are occurring online in South Sudan, including hacking, impersonation, identity theft, and other online abuses,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe want journalists and stakeholders to understand that online crimes are now regulated by law and can result in prosecution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joyce Maker from NPA said the role of the media remains critical as South Sudan prepares for elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe role of the media has become central. We encourage free, professional, and responsible journalism because it is essential for democratic processes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mayak Majak Madit urged journalists to remain neutral and uphold professional ethics while reporting during the electoral period.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs journalists, our role is to inform the public and raise awareness that elections are coming in 2026,\u201d he said. \u201cThe media must remain neutral, objective, and committed to verification before publishing or broadcasting any information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also warned against misinformation and disinformation on social media platforms.<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Lakes State High Election Committee, Marop Makoi Marial, described the workshop as productive and said preparations for the elections are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are preparing ourselves as the National Elections Commission and working closely with partners and other institutions within the state,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Yang Ater Yang The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJoSS), with support from Norwegian People\u2019s Aid (NPA), trained 20 journalists and stakeholders in Rumbek on electoral reporting, media professionalism, and cybercrime awareness ahead of South Sudan\u2019s anticipated 2026 elections.
