The headteacher said many classrooms remain nearly empty despite teachers already reporting back to work and lessons beginning.

“We are worried because only a few learners have turned up since the term started. Education is important for every child, and parents must make an effort to send their children to school immediately,” the headteacher said.

The school administrator added that delayed reporting affects learning and disrupts the academic calendar, especially for refugee children who already face many challenges in accessing quality education.

Retired teacher Asiku Ben also blamed the low attendance on what he described as a long-standing mentality among some parents who believe that the first week of school should only be used for cleaning school compounds instead of learning.

“That mentality must stop,” Asiku Ben told No. 1 Citizen Newspaper. “The first week is part of the school term, and children should be present from day one. Cleaning activities can still be done while lessons continue.”

He urged parents and guardians in the settlement to prioritise education and support schools by ensuring that children attend classes regularly and on time.

“Education is the key to a better future for these children. Parents should not keep learners at home for unnecessary reasons,” he added.

Another resident, Angua Stella, also appealed to parents to take education seriously. She said many children in the settlement risk falling behind academically because of delayed reporting to school.

“As parents, we must encourage our children to value education. If children miss the beginning of the term, it becomes difficult for them to catch up with others,” Stella said.

Community leaders and teachers in Maaji Refugee Settlement continue to encourage parents to cooperate with schools to improve attendance and promote better learning outcomes for refugee children in Adjumani District.

Education stakeholders believe that improving school attendance will help children in the settlement build a brighter future despite the hardships they face as refugees.

By Jurugo Emmanuel Ogasto Low school attendance has been reported in Maaji Refugee Settlement in Adjumani District as schools reopen for the new term, prompting education stakeholders to appeal to parents to ensure their children return to class.
