Participants at the dialogue signed 24 resolutions aimed at restoring peace, promoting reconciliation, and preventing future violence.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Zachariah Kuoi Majak, Director General in the Lakes State Ministry of Peacebuilding, said the resolutions address key issues, including land disputes, law enforcement, and community reconciliation.

“The communities have acknowledged that the violence was a mistake and have agreed that disputes over land should be handled by the government through legal mechanisms,” he said.

Majak noted that the three communities share historical and family ties and stressed that violence only weakens their relationship.

“These people are one family with blood relations. Killing one another brings no benefit. They have now accepted peace and agreed to rebuild their relationship and live together as one community,” he said.

Youth representatives also expressed commitment to ending violence. Chol Magang, a youth member from the Beer section, said years of conflict had brought suffering without any gains.

“The fighting between us has gone on for too long. We want peace, development, and stronger relations among our communities. Fighting has no benefits, while peaceful coexistence creates opportunities for progress,” he said.

Mary Arun Gol, Peace Canal Area Coordinator in Rumbek, said the dialogue resulted in important resolutions, including reconciliation, freedom of movement, freedom of cattle migration, return of displaced persons, and stronger cooperation between chiefs, intellectuals, women, and youth leaders.

She added that participants called on the Lakes State government to strengthen the recently established special court to handle cattle camp and land disputes.

Traditional leaders welcomed the agreement and urged communities to refrain from further violence.

Sultan Malek Aguet, Executive Chief of Amongpiny Payam in Rumbek Central County, said future disputes should be resolved through government institutions rather than armed confrontation.

“We do not want more deaths among the Aliap, Beer, and Panyar communities. Any grievances should be handled by the government and the courts,” he said.

Community intellectuals said the agreement marks a significant step toward ending a conflict that has persisted for more than a decade around the Awai cattle camp.

Participants pledged to disseminate the resolutions across their communities and work together to ensure lasting peace, reconciliation, and development in both Rumbek East and Rumbek Central counties.

By Yang Ater Yang Communities from the Aliap, Panyar, and Beer sections in Rumbek East and Rumbek Central counties have agreed to reconcile and peacefully coexist following deadly intercommunal clashes linked to disputes over grazing land and cattle camps earlier this year.
