{"id":45253,"date":"2026-06-10T16:46:55","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T14:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=45253"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:46:55","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T14:46:55","slug":"governor-lobong-threatens-to-withdraw-licenses-from-mining-companies-over-tax-obligations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/10\/governor-lobong-threatens-to-withdraw-licenses-from-mining-companies-over-tax-obligations\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Lobong threatens to withdraw licenses from mining companies over tax obligations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Louis Loku<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore has called on investment and mining companies operating in Greater Kapoeta to strengthen their commitment to environmental protection, community development, and compliance with state regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal came during a high-level consultative meeting held on Tuesday between state government officials and representatives of mining and investment companies operating in the region.<\/p>\n<p>According to state authorities, the discussions focused on key issues affecting host communities, including environmental conservation, provision of basic social services, maintenance of feeder roads, compliance with personal income tax (PIT) requirements, and support for peace and security initiatives through community policing programs.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Lobong commended the companies for investing in Eastern Equatoria State, noting that private sector investment is essential for economic growth, job creation, and local development.<\/p>\n<p>However, he raised concerns over increasing community complaints about environmental degradation linked to mining activities, particularly water pollution.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that environmental protection is a shared responsibility and warned that continued pollution could harm public health, livelihoods, and ecosystems in affected areas.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also noted that many host communities still face limited access to essential services such as healthcare, education, clean water, roads, and employment opportunities, despite the presence of mining companies in the region.<\/p>\n<p>He further observed that although investment in the state has increased, contributions to community development and state revenue remain insufficient to significantly improve public service delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Lobong warned that companies failing to comply with environmental regulations, tax obligations, and corporate social responsibility commitments risk losing their operational licenses within the state.<\/p>\n<p>The State Ministry of Trade and Industry also raised concerns about recruitment practices in some companies, environmental management standards, and limited support for community development initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the government\u2019s recommendations, Governor Lobong urged companies to jointly support the rehabilitation of the BUDI II Bridge, improve healthcare facilities, renovate schools, and provide incentives for teachers and healthcare workers in mining areas.<\/p>\n<p>In response, company representatives welcomed the government\u2019s guidance and reaffirmed their commitment to improving environmental management, strengthening community engagement, fulfilling corporate social responsibilities, and complying with state laws.<\/p>\n<p>They also pledged support for upgrading Kapoeta Civil Hospital through the provision of medical equipment to improve healthcare services.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting concluded with both government and private sector actors reaffirming their commitment to responsible investment, environmental sustainability, and improved living conditions for communities across Eastern Equatoria State.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Louis Loku Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore has called on investment and mining companies operating in Greater Kapoeta to strengthen their commitment to environmental protection, community development, and compliance with state regulations.
