We have built a strong collaboration and partnership with our partners, including the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the South Sudan Red Cross, and other stakeholders,” Banak said.

Banak stressed the importance of maintaining collaboration to support opportunities and information-sharing platforms.

He encouraged the participants to continue building their understanding of disaster risk management and early warning terminology to improve the quality and accuracy of reporting.

“One of the key takeaways from this training is the importance of understanding disaster risk management and early warning terminologies. A common understanding of these concepts is essential for effective communication and accurate reporting,” Banak said.

Banak also called for greater inclusivity in capacity-building initiatives, emphasising the need to increase opportunities for women journalists and young female media professionals.

Participants were further urged to verify information before publishing stories related to disasters, weather forecasts, and emergencies, highlighting the role of media in helping communities prepare for hazards before they develop into disasters.

“As we move forward, let us shift from reactive reporting to informed and preventive reporting. Disaster risk reduction is not only about responding to emergencies after they occur; it is about identifying risks early and taking action to reduce their impact before they become disasters,” the official said.

Meanwhile, South Sudan Red Cross (SSRC) and partner organisations’ representative, Ladu, praised the active participation of attendees and the collaborative spirit demonstrated throughout the workshop.

“We are very pleased that this initiative has successfully reached its conclusion this evening. The process has been highly participatory, with strong engagement from all the participants present,” the representative said.

Ladu emphasised the importance of continuing efforts to strengthen cooperation among media institutions across the country.

“As we move forward, we remain committed to working together to ensure that we complete what we often refer to as the ‘last mile’ in strengthening media collaboration and development across the country,” the speaker noted.

The event brought together participants from various parts of South Sudan, including Yambio, Kapoeta, Bor, and other locations, demonstrating growing national interest in strengthening media engagement on disaster risk management, early warning systems, and professional development.

Organisers pledged to continue engaging participants through future forums, training sessions, and communication platforms to improve access to reliable information, strengthen community resilience, and reduce disaster risks across the country.

By Sabri Dibaco Media professionals, government representatives, humanitarian partners, and disaster risk management experts have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration on disaster risk communication and early warning systems following the conclusion of a media training workshop in Juba.
