Without it, there is no life; we call it a magic drug because it saves lives every day, yet there is no factory that produces blood. It depends entirely on voluntary donors,” Oromo said.

The minister urged citizens across the country to embrace regular blood donation, stressing that donating blood is a civic responsibility that benefits the entire community.

The event brought together representatives from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the South Sudan Red Cross Society, civil society organisations, schools, universities, and development partners.

The minister applauded individuals who have donated blood multiple times, describing their contributions as priceless.

“The most precious currency is not the dollar, euro, or pound; it is blood. One drop for humanity: new blood saves lives,” Oromo stated.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to improving blood services across South Sudan, revealing that the Ministry of Health has recently distributed 13 blood refrigerators to the country’s ten states and three administrative areas as part of efforts to expand blood storage and transfusion services.

Currently, blood transfusion services are operational in only three locations, but the government plans to increase that number to sixteen.

The minister also announced that a legal framework is being developed to grant the National Blood Transfusion Service greater autonomy, enabling it to operate with its own budget, management, and strategic plan.

He warned that shortages of blood can have devastating consequences, especially during medical emergencies, maternal complications, trauma cases, and outbreaks of hemorrhagic diseases such as Ebola.

“As we speak, there is an Ebola outbreak in the region. Patients suffering from severe bleeding require a blood transfusion. This is why we must have enough blood in our hospitals at all times,” he said.

Organisers of the celebration set a target of collecting blood from at least 500 participants attending the event. The minister urged attendees not to leave after the ceremony but to proceed to donation points and contribute to the cause.

He thanked the South Sudan Red Cross Society, WHO, civil society organisations, schools, and communities for their continued partnership in promoting voluntary blood donation and saving lives across the country.

By Sabri Dibaco South Sudan on Tuesday joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Blood Donor Day 2026, with senior government officials, health partners, students, and volunteers gathering to celebrate voluntary blood donation and renew commitments to strengthening the country’s blood transfusion services.
