Authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are investigating the death of a woman who is suspected to have died by suicide following a domestic dispute in Ariath Payam of Aweil North County.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at around 7:00 p.m. on Monday, according to the state’s police spokesperson, Madut Ngong Aleu, who spoke to this publication in an exclusive telephone interview on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Aleu said preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased, identified as Ayak Kuch Akoon, allegedly took her own life by hanging herself after a heated argument with her husband, Garang Tong Akec.<\/p>\n

Police have detained the husband as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.<\/p>\n

“The suspect is currently being held at Ariath Police Station while investigations are underway to determine what led to the quarrel and the woman’s tragic death,” Aleu said.<\/p>\n

The deceased is reported to have left behind five children, including an eight-month-old baby.<\/p>\n

“What has shocked everyone is that the woman left behind an eight-month-old child. It is a heartbreaking situation for the entire community,” the police spokesperson added.<\/p>\n

According to Aleu, some residents have alleged that the couple had been experiencing financial hardship while struggling to support their family. Community members also claimed the couple had frequently been seen consuming alcohol together, although police said these reports remain part of the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n

“Some reports suggest the couple had been drinking together, and this may have contributed to the disagreement. However, these claims are still being investigated,” he said.<\/p>\n

The incident has saddened residents of Ariath Payam, who described the family’s death as a tragic loss.<\/p>\n

Mental health advocates have repeatedly warned that cases of suicide and self-harm in parts of South Sudan are often linked to unresolved trauma, economic hardship, family stress, substance abuse, and limited access to mental health and psychosocial support services.<\/p>\n

Community leaders and experts continue to call for greater investment in trauma healing, counselling services, and livelihood opportunities to help families cope with social and economic pressures before they escalate into tragedy.<\/p>\n
