The town was represented by the deputy mayor for planning and budgeting, James Thou Apath.

The rehabilitation work is being carried out by Ann Company Limited under a newly awarded contract.

Speaking to this publication on Thursday, Apath said the initiative was made possible through contributions from clearing agents operating at the Majok-Yith-Thiou border crossing.

“We are glad to inform the public that the clearing agents at Majok-Yith-Thiou Border Town, who depend on this road as the only lifeline connecting Sudan and Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, contributed about SSP 20 million from their own resources and appealed to the governor to support the renovation effort,” he said.

According to Apath, Governor Charles Madut Akol responded positively to the request and pledged to provide fuel to support the ongoing roadworks.

“After seeing the commitment shown by the clearing agents, the governor pledged to provide fuel for the company vehicles so that repairs can continue in the most damaged sections of the highway,” he added.

Apath said the workers operating the heavy machinery are being paid in U.S. dollars as the rehabilitation progresses toward War-Awar and Majok-Yith-Thiou near the Sudanese border.

“Each day, we pay about 450 U.S. dollars to the operators of the heavy equipment. The work is continuing well, although payments must be made in dollars,” he said.

He acknowledged that the available funds may not be sufficient to rehabilitate the entire road and that priority will be given to the most severely damaged sections.

“We are going to focus on the most impassable areas because the available resources may not be enough to renovate the entire highway. The clearing agents are still contributing from their own pockets to keep the project moving,” Apath explained.

Traders who regularly use the route have welcomed the initiative, citing the difficulties and financial losses caused by the poor condition of the road.

Simon Garang, a trader who transports goods between Sudan and Kampala, said vehicles frequently become stuck for days, resulting in costly delays and losses.

“It is very expensive when trucks get stranded. Sometimes vehicles veer off the road, and goods fall into flooded areas. You then have to hire people to recover the goods, and in some cases, looting occurs during the process,” Garang said.

Residents and traders hope the rehabilitation project will improve transportation, boost trade, and restore efficient service delivery along the important cross-border route.

Governor Charles Madut Akol reiterated earlier this week that his administration would continue providing fuel support to ensure the project progresses smoothly toward Al Mareem in Sudan’s South Kordofan State.

By Hou Akot Hou Renovation work has officially begun on the 110-kilometre road connecting the Majok-Yith-Thiou border town to Aweil East County and extending toward Al Mareem in Sudan, local authorities have confirmed.
