The government has reaffirmed its commitment to constructing the Fula Dam as part of a long-term strategy to ensure reliable electricity.<\/p>\n

The Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur, said South Sudan has the capacity to generate enough electricity to meet its domestic energy needs and even export surplus power to neighbouring countries if it invests in hydropower development.<\/p>\n

Speaking during the official media launch of the 7th Global Logistics Convention (GLC) 2026 in Juba, Makur said the country is currently utilising only about one percent of its electricity generation potential, leaving millions of South Sudanese without reliable access to power.<\/p>\n

“If you compare the power we have according to percentage, it is only one percent. The power we have in South Sudan is only one percent. This cannot serve the whole country,” the minister said. “We need energy that can cover the whole of South Sudan.”<\/p>\n

Makur said the government is pursuing a long-term strategy to harness the country’s abundant hydropower resources, with the construction of the Fula Dam identified as a key priority.<\/p>\n

“The best option is hydropower. That is why I came up with an initiative in my ministry to build our dam. The Fula Dam is a gift from God,” he said.<\/p>\n

The minister recalled visiting the proposed dam site in Nimule, where he witnessed firsthand the enormous hydropower potential.<\/p>\n

“When I visited Nimule to see that potential with my own eyes, I was surprised. I thanked God for giving South Sudan such a gift. Why should we not use this gift?” Makur said.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, the proposed Fula Dam has the capacity to generate approximately 1,800 megawatts of electricity\u2014enough to supply power throughout South Sudan while creating a surplus that could be exported to neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n

“The size of that potential is about 1,800 megawatts. It will cover all of South Sudan, and we will have a reserve. We can even sell electricity to other countries,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Makur emphasised that reliable electricity is critical to industrialisation, investment, logistics, and economic transformation. He noted that affordable and sustainable power would significantly enhance South Sudan’s competitiveness and attract both local and foreign investors.<\/p>\n

His remarks came as South Sudan prepares to host the 7th Global Logistics Convention (GLC) 2026, scheduled for August 25\u201327, 2026, at the Pyramid Continental Hotel in Juba. The convention is expected to bring together logistics experts, investors, policymakers, and business leaders from across Africa and beyond to discuss trade, transport, supply chains, and infrastructure development.<\/p>\n

The minister said the development of strategic infrastructure, including hydropower projects such as the Fula Dam, will complement South Sudan’s ambition of becoming a regional trade and logistics hub while laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
