Political leaders and regional stakeholders have reaffirmed their commitment to supporting South Sudan\u2019s preparations for peaceful, credible, and inclusive general elections scheduled for December 2026.<\/p>\n

The commitment was made during a high-level forum held in honour of former Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete.<\/p>\n

The event brought together representatives from the African Union (AU), IGAD, the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), and other national and international partners, as well as parties to the 2018 peace agreement.<\/p>\n

Held under the theme \u201cThe Road to December 2026 Elections,\u201d the forum reviewed progress toward the country\u2019s first post-independence general elections and the steps needed to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.<\/p>\n

A key outcome of the meeting was the announcement that an inter-party dialogue process will begin next month, bringing together all political parties, including holdout groups, to strengthen consensus and promote political inclusivity ahead of the polls.<\/p>\n

Stakeholders said the dialogue is expected to build trust among political actors, address outstanding issues, and enhance cooperation in implementing the electoral roadmap.<\/p>\n

Participants emphasised that the 2026 elections remain the most viable path to ending the transitional period and establishing a democratically elected government. They also underscored the need for sustained dialogue, transparency, and inclusive political participation.<\/p>\n

Delegates further raised concerns over challenges that could affect the electoral process, including inadequate funding, the need to maintain peace and stability, and delays in implementing key provisions of the peace agreement.<\/p>\n

Security was also a major focus, with calls for the full integration and deployment of the Necessary Unified Forces (NUF) to ensure a secure environment for free, fair, and credible elections.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges, the forum reaffirmed a strong commitment from national, regional, and international partners to continue supporting South Sudan\u2019s peace process, democratic governance, and electoral preparations.<\/p>\n

The meeting concluded with renewed calls for cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure the 2026 elections contribute to lasting peace, stability, and national unity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
