Medical examinations confirmed that the patient was suffering from severe stomach ulcers.”

According to the health department, the patient is a soldier attached to the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) under the Tiger Division stationed in New Site, Yei. Medical history provided by the patient indicated a long-standing ulcer condition, which had recently worsened.

Officials further revealed that the patient had reportedly spent time in detention prior to the onset of severe complications that led to internal bleeding.

Yei Civil Hospital Administrator Towongo Ronald confirmed that the patient was admitted while in critical condition, but responded well to emergency medical attention.

“The patient vomited a significant amount of blood, which understandably alarmed many people,” Ronald said. “However, after conducting medical examinations, we confirmed severe stomach ulcers. His body temperature was normal, and there were no clinical signs of Ebola infection.”

The patient, identified as Santino Bol Deng, also spoke from his hospital bed, dismissing rumours that he had contracted Ebola. He explained that he has been battling ulcers since last year and had previously received treatment.

“I have been suffering from ulcers since last year and received treatment,” Deng said. “After a disagreement with fellow soldiers, I spent the night in detention. The following morning, I started vomiting blood and was taken to the hospital.”

He added that medical examinations confirmed severe ulcer wounds in his stomach, which were responsible for the bleeding episode.

The incident drew large crowds of concerned residents to Yei Civil Hospital and prompted visits from government officials and community leaders seeking clarification on the situation.

Health authorities used the opportunity to reassure the public that there is currently no confirmed Ebola case in Yei River County or anywhere in South Sudan.

They also noted that while Ebola cases have been reported in neighbouring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, no transmission has been detected locally.

Officials have urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information, warning that rumours can fuel unnecessary panic and disrupt public order.

“Community members should always report suspected health emergencies to medical professionals instead of drawing conclusions based on appearance alone,” Musoga added.

Authorities further encouraged the public to continue observing general hygiene and disease-prevention measures recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and national health institutions, while remaining calm and relying on verified medical information.

The health department says surveillance systems remain active to quickly detect and respond to any potential public health threats in the county.

By James Innocent Health authorities in Yei River County have dismissed growing public fears of a suspected Ebola case after laboratory tests confirmed that a patient who had been reported to be vomiting blood was instead suffering from severe stomach ulcers.
