He was 51.

Family members and community leaders confirmed that the former commissioner died on June 19 after battling a brief illness. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from government officials, traditional leaders, political colleagues, and residents, who described him as a humble leader dedicated to peace, security, and public service.

Confirming the news, Sultan Manyang Derder Ajieng, Paramount Chief of Rumbek East County, described the late commissioner as a fair and committed public servant whose leadership positively impacted the lives of many people.

“He died in Juba following a short illness. The late Mabor Makuac Ater will be remembered as a fair leader who delivered services to the people without discrimination and always ensured justice for those who deserved it,” Sultan Manyang said.

He added that Mabor was admired for his humility and close relationship with ordinary citizens, particularly young people.

“He was a social person who enjoyed interacting with the community and the youth. Above all, he was a peacemaker who worked tirelessly to promote harmony in Rumbek East County,” he added.

Former SPLM Secretary General for Rumbek East County, Gueny Madit, also paid tribute, describing the late commissioner as a committed party member and patriot.

“I learned about this unfortunate news this morning. I was not aware that he had been ill. From what I have been told, he had been suffering from diabetes and, in the last four days, developed a fever before being admitted to the hospital for treatment,” Madit said.

According to Madit, Mabor’s health deteriorated on Friday morning before he succumbed to the illness.

Reflecting on their years of service together, Madit praised the former commissioner for his commitment to maintaining peace and responding swiftly to security challenges.

“When I served as SPLM Secretary General, he was a commissioner. He responded quickly to security concerns, and during his leadership, Rumbek East remained relatively peaceful. He loved his people and was a devoted SPLM member. He was often seen wearing the party’s red cap and other SPLM attire,” he recalled.

The former office manager to the late commissioner, John Dhuorjang Mangok, said Mabor served twice as county commissioner under different administrative arrangements.

“He first served as commissioner of the former Eastern Bahr el Naam County between 2017 and 2018. Following the reorganisation of counties, he later served as Commissioner of Rumbek East County from 2022 to 2023,” Mangok explained.

He described the late commissioner as a generous family man and dedicated public servant whose leadership focused on peace, security, and community welfare.

“Hon. Mabor believed in sharing what he had with the people and his colleagues. During his tenure, he prioritised security and worked hard to ensure peace and stability across the county,” Mangok said.

Mangok also disclosed that the late commissioner had been receiving treatment for diabetes at Nile King Specialised Hospital since being diagnosed with the condition in 2023.

“He had been under medical care for diabetes, and although the disease was being managed, he sadly passed away after his condition worsened,” he said.

He added that funeral arrangements were still being finalised, with family members expected to decide whether the late commissioner would be buried in Rumbek Town or at his ancestral home in Atiaba Payam.

“The public will be informed once a decision is made regarding the transportation of his remains from Juba and the burial arrangements,” Mangok said.

Meanwhile, the current Commissioner of Rumbek East County, Zechariah Malual Anyuon, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing the late Mabor as a distinguished public servant and a true son of Rumbek East.

In a condolence message, Anyuon said the late commissioner served the county with commitment, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to peace and unity.

“Late Hon. Mabor Makuac Ater was a dedicated public servant and a true son of Rumbek East. During his time in office, he served the people with commitment, devotion, and a strong spirit of peace and unity,” the commissioner said.

He noted that Mabor’s leadership contributed significantly to the development and stability of both Rumbek East County and Lakes State, adding that his death represents a profound loss to the county and the nation.

“His leadership contributed greatly to Lakes State. His passing is a great loss to his family, to Rumbek East County, and to the entire community. The vacuum he leaves behind will be deeply felt,” Anyuon added.

On behalf of the county government and the people of Rumbek East, the commissioner extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, and former colleagues.

“May the Almighty God grant them strength and comfort during this difficult time.”

The death of Mabor Makuac Ater has been widely mourned across Lakes State, where he is remembered as a leader who championed peace, strengthened local security, and remained accessible to the people he served.

Throughout his years in public office, colleagues say he prioritised community dialogue, justice, and social cohesion, earning respect across political and community divides. As tributes continue to pour in, many residents say his legacy of humility, service, and dedication to the people of Rumbek East will endure for generations.

By Yang Ater Yang The people of Rumbek East County and the wider Lakes State community are mourning the death of former Rumbek East County Commissioner Mabor Makuac Ater, who passed away in Juba on Friday after a short illness.
