We have been waiting for.”

She said these women requested this store facility 3 years ago, and today it has been implemented.

“I would like to appreciate the Swiss embassy for supporting this project. It is a pilot and short, and it is an 18-month project, but it has had a positive impact,” she said. “Also, they have gone so far; I’m supporting the VSLA group. They give them grants to expand their business, and one group cost them $10,000 dollars and this is a great achievement from the Swiss Peace and Peace in Practice project, and today they also gave a grant to the VSLA group, one in Mabui village and the other one in Malek, and it is the same women in Mabui and Malek, and it is the same women in the peace farm,” she stated.

This grant was given to women to expand their businesses in these three women’s peace farms, the first group, if I remember. It is around $5,000, and another group is around $8,000, and a few have already been purchased,” she said.

Deborah Abaithok Dongrin, a representative of women in Malek Payam of Rumbek Central County, said that she is happy with the work that they are doing in the villages.

“We have spent 4 years here. This includes the women from Rup and Kuei, and we have joined our hands to work together to sustain our lives in the villages,” she said. “We also appreciate Peace Canal for the support they give us. Now, they have built a big house for us because in the past we used to live in the make-shifts, but now we are living in the concrete building, roofed with an iron sheet.”

She said there is nowhere you can get vegetables except from us, and it has now improved the living standard.

“We no longer buy substandard food items imported from Uganda to South Sudan. We grow our own organic foods naturally from our gardens, and we are able to send our children to school. We sell our garden products in the market to take our children to school, and we no longer ask our men to feed us or bring food to eat.

She said what we are doing now is teaching young women in Rumbek how to improve their lives through gardening in Rumbek.

“What we are lacking currently is water and bicycles to transport our products to the market in Rumbek, and we are living in peace and harmony with each other in the village here,” she said.

Adhieu Ater Majok, a woman’s representative in Rumbek Central County, said that they are members of Akut-door groups of peace in Canal, and they are in Malok village.

“We have opened a farm in this village for cultivation. We have been here for the last 4 years. Our farms depend entirely on rain, and we were living in a makeshift thatch tukul with grass. Sometimes thieves come and steal our property, or sometimes wildfires can consume our tukul to ashes. But now, we have received support from Peace Canal. They have built a store for us.”

She said now there is no other fear of stealing our properties and that they will keep all their belongings in the store.

“I want to inform our colleagues in Rumbek Central County that togetherness brings valuable things to people, and it is because of peace in Rumbek Central that we are able to work on the farm and live peacefully,” she said. “The late Dr. John Garang said to take the town to the people, and this is what we are doing here today in the villages.”

She said if there had been no peace during the time of Rin Tueny, at the time we would not have gotten this store here in the village.

By Yang Ater Yang Peace Canal, Lakes State, has officially handed over a newly constructed store facility at Malok Farms, costing $10,000, to the Kuei and Rup Women’s Peace Farms Group, funded by SWISS under the Peace in Practice project.
