Unfortunately, despite these advantages, the country continues to rely heavily on food imports from neighbouring countries.

This dependence not only drains scarce foreign currency but also exposes citizens to food shortages and rising prices.

The government must therefore place agriculture at the center of its development agenda by providing meaningful support to farmers across the country.

Most farmers in South Sudan practice small-scale subsistence agriculture using traditional methods. They often face numerous challenges, including limited access to quality seeds, modern farming equipment, fertilisers, storage facilities, and agricultural extension services. In many rural areas, poor road networks make it difficult for farmers to transport their produce to markets, leading to significant post-harvest losses.

As a result, farmers earn little income despite their hard work and contributions to feeding the nation.

To address these challenges, the government should increase investment in the agricultural sector. Agricultural extension programs should be strengthened to provide farmers with training on modern farming techniques, pest control, irrigation, and climate-smart agriculture.

Such support would improve productivity and help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns that increasingly threaten agricultural production.

The government should also establish affordable agricultural credit schemes to enable farmers to purchase tools, machinery, and other essential inputs. Access to finance remains one of the biggest obstacles preventing farmers from expanding their operations and increasing yields.

Supporting farmers’ cooperatives would further strengthen their bargaining power and improve access to markets.

Infrastructure development is equally important. The construction and maintenance of feeder roads, storage facilities, and local markets would reduce transportation costs and minimise crop losses. Investments in agro-processing industries would create employment opportunities while adding value to locally produced agricultural products.

Furthermore, young people and women should be encouraged to participate in agriculture through training programs, land access initiatives, and startup support for agribusiness ventures. This would not only boost food production but also help address unemployment and poverty.

South Sudan cannot achieve lasting economic growth while neglecting agriculture. Supporting farmers is essential for ensuring food security, creating jobs, reducing poverty, and diversifying the economy beyond oil dependence.

By investing in agriculture today, the government can lay a strong foundation for a prosperous and self-reliant South Sudan tomorrow.

Agriculture is widely recognised as the backbone of South Sudan’s economy and the main source of livelihood for the majority of the country’s population.
