This is because the nation succeeds when both the civilians and the government have agreed to work together and make their country achieve its goals as an independent nation by implementing policies that can bring quick development to the country.

In every nation in the world, contribution to the national development is inclusive, and much of the work contributing to the national development is done by the civilians to let their country recover from the challenges that affect its progress, while the government generates the income from both the public and the private sectors of business and invests much of it into something that is thought to benefit the nation as a whole.

In the nation where both the government and the civilians are reluctant to play key roles for the success of their country, the chances for the achievement of developmental goals are limited and less than the chances of failure, and such a nation continues facing hardship forever if care is not taken by the government to bring about tough strategies where all citizens are encouraged to be committed to doing anything that can bring positive change to the development of the country.

During the time of liberation, both the government and the civilians had worked hand in hand by implementing key responsibilities, which brought about the success of the independent South Sudan, and that was why South Sudan attained her independence, which we had celebrated in 2011, and if the South Sudanese had united and worked for the common good for their nation, then South Sudan would have recovered quickly from all the crises that prevent her from developing faster compared to the other nations in the world.

On the other hand, the nation can develop within a short period of time when there is a policy that implements peace and unity among the people, but the people of South Sudan and their government have rejected peace and unity after independence, and they continue fighting for the meaningless civil war, which has been affecting the national goal of development for thirteen good years without doubt to deny the damages it has caused to the country.

The international community and its agencies have conducted workshops for creating awareness among the countrymen of South Sudan about the danger of war and its negative consequences to the development and the people, but the workshop programs that were offered by the United States agencies for peace implementation in South Sudan have not transformed the society of South Sudan to believe in peace as the only way of achieving development in the nation.

Furthermore, there is no country in the world which achieves its goals of development when the government has allowed corruption to prevail and the national resources, which are supposed to be invested in developing the nation, have been mismanaged and have been plundered by a few government officials who keep them somewhere for their future benefits instead of investing them for the benefit of the nation.

According to the international policy of fighting against corruption as the greatest enemy, which kills the development of nations throughout the whole world, accountability for any social injustice is prioritised by the law to search for corrupt leaders and hold them accountable for whatever they have done against the national constitution.

But the government of South Sudan has not implemented the international policy of fighting against corruption, and no corrupt government officials are held responsible for whatever they have done against the constitution of the country.

The money, which is generated from both the public and private sectors of business and is supposed to be used in the development of the nation by the government, disappears to nowhere and to nobody, and no accountability is held by the authority to investigate the true source of mismanagement and whoever has stolen it.

This has made South Sudan remain behind in terms of development, because the nation develops when all of us are held accountable for any crime that we have committed against the success of our country.

At the same time, farming is very important in improving the living standard of the people, but both the civilians and the government of South Sudan have abandoned agriculture, which is the backbone of the country, and this has contributed to the national economic crisis, which can’t be tackled by the economists if the government and the civilians can’t come up with the policies that will be applied to close the gap that was created by the economic instability, which was experienced in the country for a long time.

As a result of poverty caused by the economic crisis, the youth in our society are being lured and hired by the politicians to participate in instigating chaos, and this has led to the political crisis, which has created a social crisis in the society of South Sudan after independence.

According to Dr. John Garang’s statement, which he had made before the independence of South Sudan, development should be extended to the rural areas rather than being centralised in town, and this will help in the quick delivery of services to the rural areas, and this would reduce rural-to-urban migration of citizens in the remote areas.

That policy of Dr. John Garang, in which he had proposed a proposal of taking the town to the village for universal development in the country, was countermanded by the new leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, and that is why there are no roads, schools, or hospitals in many rural areas of South Sudan.

Therefore, the nation can be considered developed when the development covers the whole country, and this assumption has not been seen in South Sudan since the new leadership of Salva Kiir Mayardit assumed the national leadership after the death of our grandfather Dr. John Garang De Mabior and after the independence of South Sudan.

In the new leadership of Salva Kiir Mayardit, the opportunity for South Sudan to achieve its developmental goals is difficult to achieve, and only political, economic, and social crises are being faced everywhere, and this has led to the widespread displacement of people living in the ten states of South Sudan.

As citizens, we are waiting for the national election that is going to be held in 2026, and we are going to see whether the coming election will solve all the problems that the Republic of South Sudan is facing.

To tell the truth for the sake of the nation, I am writing to inform the public that the failure of South Sudan to achieve her developmental goals as an independent nation shouldn’t be blamed only on the government as the root cause for the failure, but this is a collective responsibility where both the civilians and the government have failed to frame the suitable formulas that will be applied to solve all the problems, which delays the quick development of South Sudan.

Therefore, if the people of South Sudan want their nation to develop, let us stop playing negative roles that will bring about the downfall of the Republic of South Sudan.

Writer: Ayuel Mangok Angui When a nation fails to achieve its main objectives, the accountability for its failure to obtain its chief goals
