As a result, rainwater cannot flow freely, leading to flooding in residential areas, markets, and major roads.

Besides disrupting transport and business activities, stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of malaria and other waterborne diseases.

The City Council has a responsibility to ensure that drainage systems are regularly cleaned and maintained before and during the rainy season.

Waste collection services should also be strengthened, especially in densely populated neighborhoods where rubbish often accumulates for days. Installing more public waste bins and ensuring timely garbage collection would go a long way in improving sanitation.

However, maintaining a clean city is not the responsibility of the authorities alone. Residents, business owners, and community leaders must also play their part by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding the dumping of rubbish into drainage channels.

Public awareness campaigns through local radio stations, schools, churches, and community meetings can help educate citizens on the importance of environmental cleanliness.

The rainy season should not become a period of avoidable suffering caused by poor sanitation.

A cleaner city benefits everyone by reducing disease outbreaks, protecting the environment, improving road accessibility, and creating a more attractive image for visitors and investors. Clean surroundings also promote dignity and improve the quality of life for all residents.

Juba is the capital of South Sudan and should set an example in urban management and environmental hygiene. With proper planning, effective waste management, and cooperation between the City Council and the public, many of the sanitation challenges experienced during the rainy season can be addressed.

The time to act is now. By making cleanliness a top priority during the rainy season, the Juba City Council can safeguard public health, protect infrastructure, and build a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient capital city for present and future generations.

The arrival of the rainy season in Juba brings much-needed relief from the scorching heat, but it also exposes one of the city’s most persistent challenges: poor sanitation.
