{"id":45911,"date":"2026-07-07T14:34:42","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T12:34:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=45911"},"modified":"2026-07-07T14:35:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T12:35:27","slug":"akobo-commissioner-and-others-killed-in-a-deadly-attack-as-state-minister-confirms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/07\/akobo-commissioner-and-others-killed-in-a-deadly-attack-as-state-minister-confirms\/","title":{"rendered":"Akobo Commissioner, and others killed in a deadly attack as State Minister confirms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Sabri Dibaco <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Jonglei State Government has confirmed the killing of Akobo County Commissioner James Kueth Makuach.<\/p>\n<p>The state government described Sunday&#8217;s attack in Walgaak Payam as a targeted mission against senior county officials rather than an attempt to seize the area.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to No. Citizen Newspaper, State Information Minister Nyamar Lony said the attackers specifically targeted Commissioner James Kueth Makuach, the executive director of Akobo County.<\/p>\n<p>She added that it also targeted a brigadier general and other officials during the early morning assault on July 5.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Government of Jonglei State would like to inform the people of South Sudan about the assassination mission targeting James Kueth Makuach, Commissioner of Akobo County, the Executive Director of Akobo County, a brigadier general, and four others early on Sunday morning,&#8221; Nyamar said.<\/p>\n<p>She condemned the attack in the strongest terms, describing it as a &#8220;barbaric and brutal&#8221; act that claimed the lives of six people.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Government of Jonglei State condemns in the strongest terms possible the barbaric and brutal assassination mission that resulted in the killing of the Akobo County commissioner, his executive director, and four others,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said six people have so far been confirmed dead, while the number of those injured remains unknown due to communication challenges in the area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t yet received the full number of the wounded. A flight was dispatched to evacuate the injured for treatment, but it has not yet landed. We are waiting for them to arrive in Juba so that we can confirm the number of casualties because there is no network coverage in Walgaak,&#8221; she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Nyamar stressed that government forces remain firmly in control of Walgaak, dismissing suggestions that the attackers intended to capture the town.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government is in control of Walgaak. This was not an attack to fight the government but an assassination mission,&#8221; she said, adding that calm has since returned to the area.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, South Sudanese civil society organisations have strongly condemned the killings, describing the attack as a serious threat to peace and stability in the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued after the incident, the organisations called for an immediate, impartial, and independent investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.<\/p>\n<p>They also urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation in Jonglei State.
