A three-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening legislative oversight of public financial management in Lakes State concluded in Rumbek.<\/p>\n

The participants called for continued investment in building accountable and transparent public institutions.<\/p>\n

The training, organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), brought together 50 participants drawn from the Lakes State Transitional Legislative Assembly, the executive, and finance officers from various government ministries.
\nThe workshop was held under the theme “Strengthening Parliamentary Capacity for Fiscal Oversight in Lakes State.”<\/p>\n

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Gabriel Garang Atem Ayiik, a national economist with UNDP, said the training was part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen economic governance and improve public financial management in South Sudan.<\/p>\n

“On behalf of UNDP and its leadership, it is a privilege to be here to exchange ideas on economic development in this country,” Garang said.<\/p>\n

He noted that UNDP has supported governance and development initiatives in South Sudan since before independence and remains committed to strengthening institutions responsible for economic management.<\/p>\n

According to Garang, the project is funded by the African Development Bank and focuses on three key areas: strengthening legislative oversight, supporting the country’s statistical systems, and promoting public investment to diversify the economy beyond dependence on oil revenues.<\/p>\n

“This project seeks to strengthen oversight functions, improve statistical systems, and support public investment as a way of diversifying economic resources away from oil,” he said.<\/p>\n

Garang said South Sudan remains highly vulnerable to economic shocks, making effective public financial management and oversight increasingly important. He added that UNDP would continue supporting government institutions, subject to the availability of funding.<\/p>\n

“We will continue to support revenue mobilisation, resource management, oversight functions, and the coordination of economic governance at all levels,” he said.<\/p>\n

The Chairperson of the Finance and Specialised Committee in the Lakes State Transitional Legislative Assembly, Ruben Mabor Bol, described the workshop as timely and valuable for lawmakers responsible for overseeing government spending.<\/p>\n

“I have attended several trainings of this kind, and the knowledge we gain continues to strengthen us in performing our oversight responsibilities,” Bol said.<\/p>\n

He appealed to UNDP and other development partners to continue supporting South Sudan’s financial institutions despite the country’s economic challenges.<\/p>\n

“Although South Sudan is facing economic instability, we should not give up. We encourage our development partners to continue strengthening our financial institutions so that they can effectively serve the public,” he said.<\/p>\n

The director general in the Lakes State Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Dut Riak, welcomed the completion of the training, describing it as overdue but necessary.<\/p>\n

He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to working closely with both the State Assembly and development partners to promote transparency and accountability in public financial management.<\/p>\n

“The Ministry of Finance remains ready to provide any information required by the Assembly because we do not want mistrust between the executive and the legislature,” Riak said.<\/p>\n

He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained during the workshop in their respective institutions, saying improved understanding of public financial management would strengthen service delivery and accountability.<\/p>\n

Closing the workshop, Lakes State Deputy Governor Isaac Luka Manga emphasised the importance of cooperation among the three arms of government\u2014the executive, legislature, and judiciary\u2014in promoting good governance.<\/p>\n

“The three organs of government must work side by side to ensure checks and balances and to strengthen government institutions because we all share responsibility,” Manga said.<\/p>\n

He assured participants that the Lakes State government, under the leadership of Governor Gen. Madhang Majok, remains committed to promoting peace, stability, and unity across the state.<\/p>\n

“I want to assure you that the government is working tirelessly to ensure stability, peace, and unity reach every community across Lakes State,” he said.<\/p>\n

The deputy governor urged participants to have confidence in the knowledge they had acquired and to use it to improve governance within their institutions.<\/p>\n

“When you believe something is impossible, it remains impossible. But if you believe in success, the knowledge you have gained here will help make Lakes State greater,” he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
