The Boma-Badingilo migratory landscape earns global recognition, marking a historic milestone for the country’s natural and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

South Sudan has achieved a historic milestone after the Boma-Badingilo migratory landscape was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming the country’s first-ever World Heritage Site.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Culture, Museums, and National Heritage following the decision of the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Busan, Republic of Korea.<\/p>\n

According to the ministry, the World Heritage Committee officially approved the inscription at 10:34 a.m. Korea Standard Time on July 26, 2026, placing South Sudan on the global map of nations recognised for protecting sites of Outstanding Universal Value.<\/p>\n

In an official statement, the Minister of Culture, Museums, and National Heritage, Hon. Sarah Nyanath Elijah Yong, described the inscription as a defining moment in the country’s history and a victory not only for South Sudan but also for Africa and the international conservation community.<\/p>\n

“This is a victory for South Sudan. This is a victory for Africa. This is a victory for the conservation of our shared global heritage,” the minister said.<\/p>\n

She noted that the inscription recognises the Outstanding Universal Value of the Boma\u2013Badingilo Migratory Landscape, which is home to one of the world’s largest terrestrial wildlife migrations and one of humanity’s most remarkable natural treasures.<\/p>\n

The minister said the recognition reflects South Sudan’s commitment to safeguarding its biodiversity, conserving its rich natural heritage, empowering local communities, and contributing to global conservation efforts.<\/p>\n

She expressed gratitude to President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the government of South Sudan, UNESCO, the World Heritage Committee, conservation partners, technical experts, local communities, traditional leaders, and development partners whose collective efforts made the historic achievement possible.<\/p>\n

The ministry also thanked all States Parties to the World Heritage Convention and members of the World Heritage Committee for supporting South Sudan’s nomination and welcoming the country into the World Heritage family.<\/p>\n

Hon. Sarah said the inscription represents more than international recognition of a protected landscape, describing it as a lasting legacy for future generations and a symbol of national pride.<\/p>\n

She called on all South Sudanese to celebrate the achievement and remain committed to protecting the country’s unique natural heritage.<\/p>\n

The official record accompanying the announcement confirmed that the inscription was adopted during the UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s 48th Session in Busan, making history as South Sudan’s first site to be included on the prestigious World Heritage List.<\/p>\n

The Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape is internationally renowned for its vast ecosystems and spectacular wildlife migration, attracting global conservation interest due to its exceptional ecological significance.<\/p>\n
