The Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reforms has stepped up efforts to strengthen domestic revenue collection.<\/p>\n

The committee held a crucial meeting with Eastern Equatoria State leaders, security agencies, and revenue-collecting institutions at the Nimule border crossing.<\/p>\n

As the country faces economic challenges, the meeting is aimed at improving coordination and eliminating revenue leakages.<\/p>\n

The committee, chaired by the Minister of East African Community Affairs, Gen. Pieng Deng Kuol, met on Tuesday with state officials to discuss ways of harmonising tax collection by clearly defining the revenue mandates of the national and state governments.<\/p>\n

While strengthening collaboration among institutions operating at the country’s busiest border post, the team expressed commitment.<\/p>\n

The engagement forms part of the government’s wider economic reform program aimed at improving transparency, enhancing institutional efficiency, and increasing domestic revenue amid ongoing economic challenges.<\/p>\n

Committee Rapporteur and Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, James Mawich, said the discussions focused on ensuring that both levels of government work together to maximise revenue collection and support the country’s economic recovery.<\/p>\n

“The objective of the meeting is to come together and harmonise the tax collection at the border that belongs to the national and what belongs to the state. The meeting was very productive and very fruitful, and we have agreed to cooperate and coordinate together with the state government in order to make sure that the national economy is also fixed from the state and also from the nation,” Mawich said.<\/p>\n

He noted that the committee and the state government reached a common understanding on improving coordination, saying better cooperation would help streamline tax administration and reduce inefficiencies that have affected revenue collection.<\/p>\n

Officials believe clearer institutional roles and stronger collaboration among agencies operating at the border will improve compliance and reduce duplication in tax collection responsibilities.<\/p>\n

Eastern Equatoria State Deputy Governor Carlo Andrew Akuwo welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward addressing the country’s economic difficulties through stronger cooperation between the national and state governments.<\/p>\n

“We want to assure the national leadership that 100% we will be in coordination, in cooperation, so that we move our country from the current challenges that are hindering and affecting the nation,” Akuwo said.<\/p>\n

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to implementing the committee’s recommendations and supporting ongoing economic reforms intended to strengthen public finances and improve service delivery.<\/p>\n

The meeting came after the committee held separate consultations with representatives of commercial banks operating in Nimule.<\/p>\n

Those discussions focused on improving tax remittances, implementing government directives aimed at addressing liquidity constraints, and ensuring that public revenues are promptly transferred into government accounts.<\/p>\n

The delegation was accompanied by the management of the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA), led by Commissioner General Ambassador Moun Deng Ajuet, who is overseeing inspections and reviews of institutions responsible for revenue collection at the Nimule border.<\/p>\n

The committee’s ongoing assessment seeks to identify weaknesses in the current revenue collection system and propose measures to improve accountability, transparency, and efficiency.<\/p>\n

Nimule serves as South Sudan’s busiest commercial border crossing, handling a significant volume of imports and exports that generate substantial government revenue.<\/p>\n

Authorities view strengthening border revenue management as a critical component of the country’s economic reform agenda, particularly as the government seeks to expand non-oil revenue sources and reduce revenue leakage.<\/p>\n

The committee is expected to continue engaging key stakeholders in the coming days as it advances reforms designed to improve domestic revenue mobilisation and support South Sudan’s long-term economic recovery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
