The government of South Sudan has announced plans to repatriate up to 20,000 vulnerable citizens stranded in Egypt under the first phase of a national return program, following growing concerns over the welfare of South Sudanese refugees and migrants living there.<\/p>\n

The decision was reached during a meeting of the Gender and Youth Cluster on Tuesday after ministers and government officials reviewed a report detailing the hardships faced by South Sudanese nationals in Egypt.<\/p>\n

The report highlighted the increasing vulnerability of women, children, and young people, as well as cases of South Sudanese who have reportedly been detained by Egyptian authorities.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the meeting, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Atong Kuol Manyang, said the government was committed to assisting vulnerable citizens who are living under difficult conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany South Sudanese in Egypt are facing serious challenges. Among them are vulnerable women, children, and youth, as well as people who have been arrested,\u201d Atong said.<\/p>\n

Government figures estimate that around 100,000 South Sudanese are currently living in Egypt. However, only about 57,000 are officially registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), leaving thousands without formal refugee status or access to international protection and humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n

Although the government has approved the first phase of the repatriation program, officials have not announced when the exercise will begin or explained how the returnees will be transported back to South Sudan.<\/p>\n

Details regarding funding, reception arrangements, and reintegration support also remain unclear.<\/p>\n

The announcement comes as South Sudan continues to face the challenge of supporting citizens displaced by conflict, economic hardship, and insecurity.<\/p>\n

Egypt has become one of the main destinations for South Sudanese seeking safety, education, medical treatment, and better economic opportunities since the outbreak of conflict in South Sudan in 2013.<\/p>\n

However, many migrants and refugees have struggled with rising living costs, unemployment, and legal documentation challenges.<\/p>\n

Humanitarian agencies have also warned that growing pressure on host communities and limited resources have made life increasingly difficult for refugees across the region.<\/p>\n

The government’s repatriation initiative is expected to provide relief to thousands of vulnerable South Sudanese who wish to return home. Officials say priority will be given to women, children, youth, and others considered most at risk.<\/p>\n

The move also reflects the government’s broader commitment to protecting the welfare of South Sudanese citizens living abroad.<\/p>\n

Observers say the success of the program will depend on adequate funding, coordination with Egyptian authorities and humanitarian partners, and the availability of reintegration support for returnees once they arrive in South Sudan.<\/p>\n
