Fourth accused Lt. Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam denied coordinating the Nasir attack and rejected allegations that he directed the March 2025 Nasir incident.<\/p>\n

Addressing allegations that he improperly shared confidential information with the United States ambassador, Duop told the court that his communication concerned implementation of the revitalised peace agreement and was conducted in his capacity as co-chair of the Joint Defense Board (JDB) and acting chief of SPLA-IO.<\/p>\n

He argued that the document in question was copied to the Troika countries and was therefore not confidential.<\/p>\n

Responding to accusations that he failed to warn the SSPDF command of an imminent attack on Wich Yar Adiu Garrison in Nasir, Duop denied that SPLA-IO participated in the assault.<\/p>\n

He maintained that both he and the SSPDF command received the same field reports from division commanders and military intelligence officers regarding security developments in Nasir.<\/p>\n

He further argued that armed youth involved in the incident were not under SPLA-IO command.<\/p>\n

On allegations that he sought to purchase 1,500 rounds of PKM machine-gun ammunition, Duop acknowledged receiving an offer from Lt. Col. Marko but said he declined because he did not require the ammunition.<\/p>\n

He maintained that the matter had no connection to the Nasir incident.<\/p>\n

Duop also rejected allegations that he directed intelligence gathering on SSPDF troop and barge movements.<\/p>\n

He explained that SPLA-IO’s radio communications network in Juba operated under the security arrangements of the peace agreement and that messages transmitted by radio operator First Lt. Mading Yak were official communications rather than covert intelligence reports.<\/p>\n

He distinguished between what he described as “live information,” referring to classified operational plans, and “dead information,” referring to events that had already occurred and entered the public domain.<\/p>\n

According to Duop, reports of helicopter bombardments at Doma became public information once the attacks had taken place.<\/p>\n

Regarding allegations that he opposed the rotation of SSPDF forces in Nasir, Duop acknowledged disagreeing with the Chief of Defense Forces during an official command meeting but argued that he was exercising his right as Deputy Chief of Defense Forces while defending a Joint Defense Board decision calling for deployment of the necessary unified forces.<\/p>\n

Duop also challenged the prosecution’s digital evidence, denying claims that he deleted WhatsApp messages from his Samsung Galaxy Note 20.<\/p>\n

Instead, he argued that weaknesses in the prosecution’s digital forensic evidence emerged during cross-examination and renewed the defense’s request for an independent examination of the accused persons’ phones in the interest of justice.<\/p>\n

Responding to testimony from a protected prosecution witness, Duop denied ever instructing Lt. Gen. Peter Thok Chuol to block barges from reaching Nasir.<\/p>\n

He told the court that Peter Thok had travelled to Addis Ababa for medical treatment in January 2025 with the approval of SPLA-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar and remained there throughout the Nasir incident.<\/p>\n

Duop concluded this phase of his testimony by referring to the prosecution’s opening statement, which alleged that he and other SPLA-IO commanders coordinated and directed the attack on the Nasir Garrison.<\/p>\n

He rejected those allegations and began responding to them before the presiding judge halted proceedings.<\/p>\n

The court adjourned the trial until 3 August 2026, when Lt. Gen. Duop is expected to continue his defense.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
