As I am an officer, they released me, and that money was still with me when I reached Aweil town, I began to exchange the money through an alien from Somalia at Ham Seiko, when he got the cash, he saw it was fake, and he then returned the money to me, and I have no other option but to get money for myself as I have an ailing child,” he said.

Wol says he didn’t realise that the money was fake, as he wanted to start the business of selling phones to feed his family, but unfortunately he has fallen into trouble.

He warned others against doing such business as he was being interrogated.

“As my child is suffering from a swollen foot, I attempted by all means to take French leave from Juba to save him, and that is by exchanging this money so that I can rescue her. Now it is time for me to see what I can do about this situation. And to the rest, kindly cease from doing this business, as it is risky, as somebody mistakenly exchanged the money that I wanted to sell with small phones to sell away,” he implored.

As South Sudan is grappling with an economic meltdown, most youth find themselves entangled in economic hardship; this latest incident highlights the problems that youth and young people are going through.

Officials in Aweil say the accused in question will be arraigned in court to determine the level of his penalty, as counterfeiting money is punishable under the law.

By Hou Akot Hou Security operatives in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State have been detaining a 38-year-old man in Aweil Town since July 14 over dealing in counterfeit United States dollars.
