The Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reform has announced a comprehensive 13-point resolution aimed at strengthening revenue collection, improving trade facilitation, and enhancing accountability in public financial management following a three-day stakeholders’ consultation in Nimule.<\/p>\n

The decisions were unveiled on Wednesday by the Chairperson of the Committee, Pieng Deng Kuol, during a meeting attended by representatives of the Eastern Equatoria State government, security organs, tax collection agencies, customs officials, clearing agents, commercial banks, and members of the private sector.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the conclusion of the fact-finding mission, Pieng said the resolutions were reached after extensive consultations with stakeholders operating at South Sudan’s busiest border crossing.<\/p>\n

Among the key directives announced were the full implementation of the government’s cash payment policy to improve transparency and reduce revenue leakages.<\/p>\n

The Committee also ordered the immediate removal of all unauthorised roadblocks along the Juba\u2013Nimule Highway, a move expected to ease the movement of goods and reduce transport costs for traders and consumers.<\/p>\n

In another major decision, the Committee directed the cancellation of all non-statutory tax exemptions, emphasising that only legally recognised exemptions would be honoured in an effort to broaden the government’s revenue base.<\/p>\n

To strengthen customs administration, Pieng instructed that customs security personnel currently deployed in Nimule be recalled to their parent units in Juba. He also announced a ban on middlemen and unlicensed clearing agents from conducting business at the border, saying only accredited agents would be allowed to operate.<\/p>\n

The Committee further resolved to empower the Security Economic Division to monitor transit goods from the point of entry to their final destination to curb tax evasion and illegal diversion of imports.<\/p>\n

In addition, state authorities and the Nimule Municipal Council were directed to operate without interference to enable them to effectively carry out their legal mandates in service delivery and local administration.<\/p>\n

Pieng Deng also urged all government institutions, security agencies, private sector actors, and other stakeholders to immediately implement the resolutions, stressing that coordinated action is essential to achieving the government’s broader economic reform agenda.<\/p>\n

He said the measures are intended to improve revenue mobilisation and administration, facilitate lawful trade, eliminate illegal practices, and promote greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.<\/p>\n

Nimule serves as South Sudan’s principal gateway for imports from neighbouring Uganda, making it one of the country’s most strategic trade corridors and a critical source of non-oil government revenue.<\/p>\n

The latest reforms form part of the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline border operations, strengthen financial governance, and create a more efficient and transparent trading environment amid broader national economic reform initiatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
