{"id":46635,"date":"2026-08-06T15:28:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T13:28:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/?p=46635"},"modified":"2026-08-06T15:28:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T13:28:33","slug":"civil-society-calls-for-open-political-space-ahead-of-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onecitizendaily.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/06\/civil-society-calls-for-open-political-space-ahead-of-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil Society calls for open political space ahead of elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>By Sabri Dibaco <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Chairperson of the Civil Society Network in Western Equatoria State, Emmanuel Wanga, has called on the government and all political stakeholders to guarantee civic and political space ahead of South Sudan\u2019s upcoming general elections.<\/p>\n<p>Emmanuel Wang emphasises that a peaceful and inclusive electoral environment is essential for credible polls.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the launch of the Civic and Voter Education campaign in Yambio, the capital of Western Equatoria State, the civil society leader urged security forces to remain professional and support peace throughout the electoral process, noting that years of conflict have left many soldiers and civilians with deep scars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are calling for an open civic and political space where every citizen and every political party can freely participate in the electoral process without intimidation or fear,\u201d Wanga said.<\/p>\n<p>He also appealed to members of the organised forces to prioritise national unity and stability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur soldiers have suffered for many years because of conflict. This election should be an opportunity to protect peace and safeguard the democratic rights of the people, not to return to violence,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the representative of all other Political Parties declared that member parties are fully prepared to participate in the forthcoming elections and encouraged political organisations that have not yet completed their registration to do so without delay.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are ready for the upcoming elections, and we encourage all political parties that have not yet registered to complete the registration process so that every voice can be represented,\u201d the representative said.<\/p>\n<p>He further appealed to political leaders and their supporters to respect the outcome of the elections and resolve any disputes through lawful and peaceful means rather than violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one should return to the bush because they lose an election. Elections are about the will of the people, and differences should be settled through democratic and legal processes,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>The Civic and Voter Education launch brought together representatives from civil society organisations, political parties, electoral officials, and members of the public to promote voter awareness and encourage peaceful participation in South Sudan&#8217;s electoral process.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan is preparing for its first general elections since gaining independence in 2011, following commitments under the 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).<\/p>\n<p>Civic and voter education campaigns are being rolled out across the country to educate citizens on voter registration, electoral rights and responsibilities, and the importance of peaceful participation.<\/p>\n<p>Civil society organisations and political parties have consistently called for an open political environment, adequate civic space, and non-violence to ensure that the elections are free, fair, credible, and accepted by all stakeholders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sabri Dibaco The Chairperson of the Civil Society Network in Western Equatoria State, Emmanuel Wanga, has called on the government and all political stakeholders to guarantee civic and political space ahead of South Sudan\u2019s upcoming general elections.
