The Council of Ministers has approved the Transitional Constitution of the Republic of South Sudan (Amendment No. 13) Bill, 2026.<\/p>\n

This is considered a key legal measure intended to remove constitutional barriers and facilitate preparations for the country\u2019s planned general elections in December 2026.<\/p>\n

The decision was taken during the Cabinet\u2019s Regular Meeting No. 12\/2026, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the government, the Cabinet first confirmed and adopted the resolutions of its previous Regular Meeting No. 11\/2026, held on July 24, 2026, before considering several ministerial memoranda.<\/p>\n

Presenting the first memorandum, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol requested cabinet approval of the proposed constitutional amendment, citing the implementation of Article 8.4 of the agreement.<\/p>\n

The article provides for legislative measures required to support and facilitate the electoral process during the transitional period.<\/p>\n

The government said the amendment addresses a major constitutional gap and provides the legal foundation necessary for conducting South Sudan\u2019s first general elections under the 2018 peace agreement.<\/p>\n

Following Cabinet approval, the Constitutional Amendment Bill will now be submitted to the Transitional National Legislature for debate, consideration, and possible enactment into law.<\/p>\n

The approval comes as the government accelerates preparations for the December 2026 elections, which are expected to represent a major milestone in the implementation of the peace agreement signed by South Sudan\u2019s political parties in 2018.<\/p>\n

Government officials have described the amendment as a critical step toward aligning the country\u2019s constitutional framework with the electoral roadmap and ensuring that election-related institutions have the legal authority to carry out their responsibilities.<\/p>\n

If approved by parliament and enacted, the amendment will provide the constitutional basis for the National Elections Commission and other relevant institutions to continue preparations for the polls.<\/p>\n

The planned December 2026 elections are expected to mark the end of the transitional period established under the agreement and the beginning of a new phase of political governance through an elected government.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
